LAKE NONA, Fla. – The No. 5 Saint Leo Lions met the No. 25 Azusa Pacific Cougars at the USTA National Campus in a neutral site non-conference match on Tuesday. Due to weather, the teams were first delayed and decided to ensure a final match score by moving to clinch play rules. The west coast Cougars upset the sunshine state Lions 4-0.
Saint Leo (12-5) was unable to snatch the doubles match point. Azusa Pacific (19-1) clinched the point taking the second (7-5) and third (6-2) flights. The first flight went unfinished once the point was claimed.
In singles action, three matches were left unfinished in the form of first singles
Bruno Faletto and six singles
David Perez, who were each in a deep three-set match, and second singles
Ghali Mensour.
Third, fourth and fifth singles were all decided after two sets.
Noel Kunz couldn't finish the first-set battle in fourth singles dropping a 7-6 tiebreaker. Despite efforts, he dropped a 6-1 set two, which clinched the match for Azusa Pacific.
The Saint Leo Lions look to bounce back in less than 24 hours. On Wednesday, April 5 at 3 p.m., the Green and Gold return to conference play hosting Eckerd College.
