Lions Drop Pitchers’ Duel in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team traveled to St. Augustine, Fla., Tuesday night for a non-conference contest versus Flagler College. The Lions' and Saints' pitching staffs combined to allow just three runs to cross the plate and just 10 hits over the nine innings. Flagler came away with the 2-1 victory at home over the visiting Lions.
 
Saint Leo falls to 16-15 in 2019 while Flagler improved to 20-17.
 
The game was scoreless through five innings until the Saints broke through in the sixth as they loaded the bases with one out and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. They added a second run in the seventh on an RBI single to centerfield.
 
The Lions pushed across their lone run in the eighth as senior Peyton Isaacson hit a single to left field to score classmate Jared Morello who had reached earlier in the inning on a passed ball. Saint Leo was able to get the tying run to second base but a double play ended the inning.
 
Saint Leo was able to get a runner on in the ninth but another double play ended the game giving Flagler the 2-1 victory.
 
Redshirt junior Ryan Nolan suffered the loss for the Lions on the mound after pitching 6.1 innings and allowing a pair of runners to score. He scattered three hits, struck out three and walked a pair. Junior Kaleb Huxford picked up the final two outs of the seventh for the Lions while allowing a hit and a walk. Junior Trevor Sanchez pitched the final inning with a pair of strikeouts and no walks.
 
Flagler starter Luke Cooksey pitched 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed. He pitcked up the win for the Saints, his second of the season.
 
Junior Corey Mumaw was the top offensive player for Saint Leo as he went 3-for-4 at the plate from his designated hitter position. Isaacson, senior Brett Coffel and redshirt freshman Paul Coumoulos all picked up hits in the loss while Isaacson had the lone RBI.
 
The Lions will return to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend as they travel to Nova Southeastern for a three-game series starting Friday, April 5 at 6 p.m.
