Saint Leo Sweeps Doubleheader for SSC Series Win over Embry-Riddle

SAINT LEO, Fla. – After dropping the series opener Friday night 4-1, Saint Leo softball swept the Sunshine State Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon 7-2 and the rubber match 9-5 over the visiting Embry-Riddle Eagles. In the series finale, the Lions would score a run in each six innings at bat while adding extra runs in the fifth and sixth to take the series 2-1.

Records
Saint Leo – 14-11, 7-5 SSC
Embry-Riddle - 12-9, 5-4 SSC

After dropping the first game of the series Friday night, the Lions swept the day outscoring the Eagles 16-7 to win the series. Eight different Lions recorded hits while 12 players crossed the plate on Saturday. Kendyl Crean, Alyssa Wash and Kacie Kelly led the Lions with three hits on the day and Kayleice Hooks, Deanna Falciglia, Shyanne DuBois and Ashley Morris all recording one. Kelly, DuBois and James all hit extra base hits on the day with a double apiece. Wash and James paced the team in RBI with three.

All four pitchers for the Green and Gold saw action as Auria Mounts, Sadi Avants and Sara Neuman finished with a 0.00 ERA. Mounts tossed 5.2 innings of work allowing just two hits, while picking up the save. Avants pitched one inning of work allowing one hit as Neuman tossed just 0.2 innings allowing two hits. Rachel Bean, who started both games, pitched 6.2 innings allowing 12 hits and seven earned runs. Mounts, who like Bean picked up a win Saturday, led the staff with four strikeouts in her two outings.

Game 1 – Saint Leo 7, Embry-Riddle 2
Embry-Riddle got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second after a double and back-to-back singles allowed the first run to cross. The Lions worked out of the jam and tied things at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Alyssa Wash singled through the left side to score Sarah Pauscher and Kendyl Crean

A quick 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth allowed the Lions' bats to come back and continue to strike while the iron was hot. Saint Leo plated five in the fifth on three hits and two Eagles' errors. Auria Mounts and the Green and Gold defense allowed just two hits over the final two innings, winning the first game of the twin bill 7-2.

Kacie Kelly and Alyssa Wash went 2-for-3 from the plate while Ashley Morris and Kendyl Crean were credited with the other two hits.

Game 2 – Saint Leo 9, Embry-Riddle 5
Momentum carried over to the rubber match as the Lions scored in every innings of the series finale. Saint Leo scored one in the first, second, third and fourth with three in the fifth and two in the sixth while holding the Eagles to one in the third before a lapse in play allowed four in the top of the sixth.

Bean started the game and went 5.1 innings before turning things over to Avants who went 1.0 inning. Mounts came in for the final two-thirds of the game and shut the door on the Eagles to hold on for the win.

Saint Leo saw Shyanne DuBois, Amanda James and Kayleice Hooks notch doubles in the game. DuBois and Deanna Falciglia each went 2-for-2 where Kendyl Crean went 2-for-4 and Hooks 2-for-3.
