SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo Lions handled the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, 18-4, to reset the program's best season start to 7-0. The South Region decision moved the Bears record to 3-3 on the year. In 2018, head coach
Caitlin Hansen notched the previous best season start to 6-0 during her first year at the helm.
"I was happy that we were able to jump out ahead early," commented Hansen. "I am also really happy
Mackenzie Cotter and
Marisa Souchak had great defensive games. They did not look like freshmen at all. Their work gave us a lot of opportunities on the offensive end."
The Green and Gold netted six-straight goals within the first 10 minutes of play against the visiting Bears. Lenoir-Rhyne snuck in a pair before the Lions earned another five-goal run. Each team scored one more goal for a halftime score of 12-3.
The Lions offense continued to press, scoring five more consecutive goals. The Bears put in their third goal at the 19-minute mark.
Anna Tamayo and
Janee DeLuca each tallied a goal for the Lions before the end of the game.
Rebecca Halley earned the start in goal, seeing 40 minutes of action in which she earned five saves.
"We look forward to spinning back around and facing Young Harris on Wednesday before we get a little break," concluded Hansen.
