Saint Leo Closes Home Schedule Against #19 Florida Southern; 76-55

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 19 Florida Southern Moccasins slithered past the Saint Lions 76-55 in the Green and Gold's season finale in the Marion Bowman Activities Center. Before tipping off against the Sunshine State opponent, Saint Leo celebrated its senior class in the form of graduate student Casey Wortley and senior Asia Royster.
 
Wortley, a Master of Science Criminal Justice Behavior Studies, made herself at home with ease transition to Saint Leo for her final collegiate season. Wearing the Green & Gold, she appeared in 26 games while earning 25 starts. She entered the game shooting 40.2-percent from the floor tallying 287 points as the program's season leading scorer. She has also snagged 154 rebounds for a team season-high of 5.9 rebounds per game. Wortley has also electrified Lions fans with 38 blocks.
 
Royster, a psychology major, has become a staple in the Saint Leo women's basketball program. Overcoming adversity to play three of her four years on the team, she earned 74 game appearances and 36 game starts. Royster has registered 479 points for a career 39.5-field goal percentage entering the night's contest. Off the glass, she has snatched 271 rebounds. She has also recorded 123 assists and put up 28 blocks and 96 steals.
 
Saint Leo (10-17, 5-14 SSC) was paced by Wortley with 19 points and Alani Gallagher with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Royster tapped in 10 points.
 
Florida Southern (24-3, 17-2 SSC) was led by Julia Jenike with 20 points followed by Anja Fuchs-Robetin with 17 and Camille Giardina with 12. Fuchs-Robetin earned a team-high seven rebounds.
 
 
How It Happened
  • Early in the first at 3-2, Florida Southern went on a 15-point run to bring the game to 18-2. Wortley scored six-straight points with a three-pointer, layup and a jumper. The Mocs hit a three to bring the score to 21-9 after one.
  • The Mocs opened the second quarter with a five-point run, 28-9. Saint Leo cut the gap back down to 15 off a Wortley three-pointer. Alani Gallagher hit three more free throws for a halftime score of 42-27.
  • Royster broke out in the third quarter with eight points going four-for-six at the line. Royster's three stright from the line brought the game to 49-32. Wortley followed with two points at the charity stripe, 49-34. Alex Button also put up a good free throw to end the third, 58-42.
  • The visitors reached a 20-point lead on the line to close a four-point opening run in the fourth, 62-42. Brierley's layup and three-pointer followed by Madelin Lang's layup slashed the gap to 13. The Mocs hit back-to-back shots from downtown to increase their lead to 22 at 74-52. The visitors tallied the final two points on the line for the 76-55 final.
