SAINT LEO, Fla. - Playing in front of its home crowd for the first time in 2019, Saint Leo softball held off Rollins for a 4-2 win Friday night at University Softball Stadium.
The Lions (8-7, 3-1 SSC) moved to 5-0 in home openers under the direction of head coach
Erin Kinberger with the win over Rollins ( 7-2, 2-2 SSC). On the night,
Shyanne DuBois paced the team, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored while Kayliece Hooks got her home debut started with a 2-for-3 performance.
Kacie Kelly,
Ashley Morris and
Ciara McCoy all notched one hit on the night. Hooks led the Green and Gold in RBI with two, with
Kendyl Crean and
Alexis Miniet getting credit for one.
Saint Leo started things off in the bottom of the first with two runs after
Kacie Kelly singled through the left side.
Ashley Morris would follow Kelly up with a single to the pitcher.
Kayleice Hooks would drive in the first run after hitting a inbetween grounder to third and short, where she legged out the infield single allowing Morris to score. With the bases loaded,
Alexis Miniet drew the walk, which allowed
Shyanne DuBois to come in for the second Green and Gold run.
Leading 2-0, Saint Leo tacked on another run in the bottom of the third DuBois would come in to score after starting the inning off with a single. Hooks again reached base, this time on a fielder's choice as DuBois slid in for the third run of the game.
DuBois would turn on the jets after hitting a ball into the left center gap for a leadoff triple before scoring on a
Kendyl Crean groundout to third for the fourth and what would be the final run.
Auria Mounts, who started the game in the circle for the Lions, came in to close out the game for the final two outs in the top of the seventh. With bases loaded and a 2-0 count, Mounts got the first batter she faced in the top half of the seventh to pop up to
Kayleice Hooks. Mounts then got the next Tar to hit a light chopper to herself and she got the force at the plate. With the bases still loaded and two outs, Mounts got the final out to pop up to
Kacie Kelly at second base.
Mounts tossed 6.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and moved to 5-4 on the year.
Sadi Avants went 0.2 innings with two hits and one strikeout, where
Sara Neuman walked one batter in her appearance.
