Sharks Stun the Lions on the Road, 3-1

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team faced a tough Nova Southeastern team Friday night on the road and it was the Sharks who came away with a 3-1 victory in the match. The Lions jumped out to a quick start taking the first set but the Sharks responded with three-straight victories to take the match.
 
The Lions fall to 18-9 overall in 2019 and 9-7 in Sunshine State Conference play while the Sharks improved to 15-11 and 7-8 in league action.
 
Four Lions tied for the team lead in kills on Friday as they all finished with eight in the match. Senior Victoria Omoregie moved into sixth in the Saint Leo record book for career kills with her eight. She also added three blocks and three digs in the loss. Senior Anilise Fitzi also finished with eight kills while leading the team with five blocks including two solo stops. The Walton, New Zealand native finished with a .462 hitting percentage in the match. Senior Annabella Arcari finished with eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage while adding four blocks including one solo. The final Lion with eight kills was junior Michelle Cuervo.
 
Redshirt junior Anna Garrett finished with just 30 assists over the four sets while chipping in 10 digs and a pair of kills. Sophomore libero Payton Bellano led the team with 17 digs.
 
The Lions as a team finished with a .188 hitting percentage in the match while committing 22 attack errors. The Sharks countered with a .323 hitting percentage with 17 attack errors.
 
Nova Southeastern had four attackers reach double-digit kills led by Ally Ford who turned in 14 in the match.
 
The Lions won the opening set 25-19 before dropping three-straight, 25-19, 25-22 and 25-13.
 
Saint Leo will return to action Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as the Lions travel to Sunshine State Conference leader Lynn who defeated Tampa 3-1 Friday night to claim a half game lead over the Spartans in the 2019 standings.
