Saint Leo Silences Sharks in 3-0 Sweep

SAINT LEO, Fla. – It took just over an hour to complete the Saint Leo volleyball team's match with Nova Southeastern Saturday afternoon inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center as the Lions swept the Sharks 3-0 including a dominating 25-9 third set. Five Lions finished with six or more kills in the match while Saint Leo as a team put down 12 blocks, averaging four blocks per set.
 
The win improves Saint Leo's record to 11-4 on the season and 5-2 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Sharks fell to 8-6 in 2019 and 1-5 in league action. Saint Leo won in straight-sets, 25-17, 25-22, 25-9.
 
Senior Nina Vattovaz led the Lion attack with nine kills, four digs and a pair of blocks. Junior Ashley Quero and senior Anilise Fitzi each finished with seven kills in the match. Quero did her damage in just two sets of action as she hit an impressive .462 attack percentage. Fitzi had her seven kills on just 11 attacks for a .636 attack percentage. She also led the team with eight blocks in the match. Seniors Annabella Arcari and Victoria Omoregie each finished with six kills and three blocks in the match. They also each had a solo block.
 
Redshirt junior setter Anna Garrett dished out 29 assists while digging up eight balls. She also added five blocks and a pair of kills to the mix. Sophomore libero Payton Bellano dug up a team-best 12 balls while dishing out four assists.
 
The Lions held the Sharks to a .057 hitting percentage in the match including a -.050 in the third and final set. Rachael Nelson led the Sharks with eight kills while Alex Boone had four blocks.
 
Saint Leo will return to action Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. as the Lions travel to Sunshine State Conference leader Embry-Riddle.
