SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team got back on track with a Sunshine State Conference win outplaying Palm Beach Atlantic 66-59 on Saturday.
Saint Leo (8-11, 3-8 SSC) saw four score in double-figures as
Casey Wortley carried the weight with 14 points and 11 rebounds, tied with
Olivia Lough with 14 points.
Asia Royster and
Alani Gallagher rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Gina Brierley registered nine points and 11 rebounds in the win.
Palm Beach Atlantic (2-15, 0-11 SSC) earned its largest lead by six points at 7:07 in the third quarter, 40-34 in a game that held 10 lead changes and remained tired for 4:23 minutes. The Sailfish were paced by Jonika Garvin with a double double earned a game-high 21-points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Katie Stang also put up double digit points with 10.
How It Happened
- Asia Royster scored five of the Lions' seven points in the uninterrupted opening 7-0 run. After three ties in the first quarter, 7-7, 9-9, and 14-14, Saint Leo saw Gina Brierley's second free throw give the Green and Gold a 15-14 first quarter lead.
- After a quick tie by the Sailfish, Olivia Lough drained a three to push Saint Leo ahead, 18-16. The Lions climbed out to a five-point lead, 21-16 before PBA erased that and took a 26-24 lead with 4:56 to go in the opening half. The Sailfish would ride a three-point lead, 32-29, heading into the break.
- Asia Royster's opening third quarter three tied things once again at 32 all before PBA ran out to a 40-34 lead. The Lions battled and tied things back up at 46 on an Alani Gallagher layup. A tight third quarter ended in favor of the Sailfish by one point, 50-49.
- The Lions saw Casey Wortley open the final stanza with a layup before the Sailfish tied things again on a free throw, 51-51. Saint Leo would claim a lead with 7:10 remaining, and never let the lead slip pushing it to eight points, 64-56, before going on for a seven-point win, 66-59 on two game-ending free throws by Casey Wortley. The Lions held the Saiflish to just nine points in the final period on their way to a victory.
