SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo Lions fell 75-53 to the Eckerd Tritons on Wednesday despite three Lions recording double-digits. Second quarter woes proved too much for a Saint Leo recovery.
Saint Leo (8-12, 3-9 SSC) was paced by
Madelin Lang with a career-high 15 points, just shy of a double-double with eight rebounds. Her work was supported by
Casey Wortley with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Gina Brierley added with 10 points for the Green and Gold.
Eckerd (13-6, 8-4 SSC) had four shooters put up double-figure points, led by Yarden Danan with 18 points. The Tritons only edged the Lions in rebounds by two, 35-33. The Tritons shot 49.1-percent from the field to the Lions 32.1-percent.
How It Happened
- Tied at three points, Eckerd earned a seven-point run to take an early lead. Wortley's jumper brought the game within a basket at 11-8 with 6:05 left in the first. Following Wortley's bucket, the Tritons extended their lead again off a six-point run, 17-8. Madelin Lang put up five-points combined with good shots from Wortley and Gina Brierley to cut the gap to a mere two-points, 19-17. Eckerd snuck in a layup before the next quarter, 21-17.
- Lang tallied a new career-high on the charity stripe. She contributed four of the Green and Gold's six scored in the second. Lang's second toss at the line cut the Tritons lead to four. Eckerd went on to overwhelm Saint Leo for a halftime score of 39-23.
- Lang recorded a steal that landed in the hands of Brierley. Brierley took off for the fastbreak layup for a 17-point game, 44-27, at 6:59.
- Abby Zeitsiff sunk a corner pocket three-ball for a 20-point deficit, 56-36. Eckerd earned the last bucket of the quarter again, for a score of 58-36 entering the fourth.
- Wortley earned a five-point run scoring a jumper followed by three-straight free throws. The five points moved the game to under 20 points, 62-43, at 6:22. Brierley and Asia Royster helped in the offensive efforts. Wortley struck again, 64-48, the closest the Lions would cut the Tritons lead for the remainder of the game. Olivia Lough knocked down the last points of the contest with a good jumper, 75-53.
