Cold Shooting Costly at Lynn, Women’s Basketball Fall 67-50

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team dropped a 67-50 loss at Lynn on Wednesday. The Fighting Knight defense kept any Lion from scoring double figures or earning double digit rebounds.

Saint Leo (6-7, 1-4 SSC) was held below their season shooting average of 39.1-percent, 35.1-percent around the arch. At Lynn, the Green and Gold shot 26.5-percent from the field, 18.8-percent from the three-point range. Madelin Lang earned team-high eight points and team-high seven rebounds. The Lions had 21 points contributed by the bench with five points from Delaney Bernard, Tamara Shash, Abby Zeitsiff, and Oliva Lough. The Lions scored 12 points off turnovers.

Lynn (9-1, 3-1 SSC) was led by Kelsi Fizer's double-double scoring 10 points, earning 12 rebounds. Dani Lozzi and Janay Williams helped with nine points apiece. Williams also added eight rebounds. The Fighting Knights tallied 30 points from off the bench and 22 points off turnovers.
 
How It Happened
  • Saint Leo tied the game and took the lead at 11-9 off three consecutive three-pointers, outscoring Lynn 9-4. Lynn retook the lead on the charity stripe in the midst of a 5-0 closing first quarter run. The Fighting Knights wouldn't give up the lead for the remainder of the game. The five unanswered points handed the Fighting Knights a 14-11 lead after one.
  • Another five-point run by the Fighting Knights handed the Lions a six-point hole. Shash helped spark the Lions' offensive efforts with a spin around layup followed by two good jumpers from Asia Royster and Zeitsiff. Despite efforts, Saint Leo's offense was unable to make a field goal in the last three minutes of the second quarter for a 30-21 halftime score.
  • The Fighting Knights went on a six-point run during another scoring drought by the Lions. Lynn improved their lead to 14-point at 46-32.  
  • Lynn outscored Saint Leo 8-1 in the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter. Olivia Lough's bucket cut Lynn's lead to 18. With 4:22 left on the clock, Saint Leo generated 11-2 run over Lynn featuring a three-pointer by Gina Brierley. Shash hit a three-pointer but the late boost was too late as Lynn took the 67-50 decision.
 
Up Next
Saint Leo will stay on the road to continue play in the Sunshine State Conference. The Lions will travel to Embry-Riddle on Saturday, January 5 for a 4 p.m. tip-off against the Eagles.
