SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team fell 60-55 to Barry on Saturday in the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The Lions made up a 14-point halftime deficit to tie the game with less than two minutes remaining. Despite the comeback efforts, Saint Leo couldn't find the basket in their last four attempts, as the Barry Buccaneers took the game at the free throw line.
Saint Leo (7-10, 2-7 SSC) saw
Olivia Lough break out in the third quarter on her way to a 12-point game. She was joined in double-figures by
Casey Wortley with 11 points and
Alani Gallagher with 10 respectively.
Asia Royster recorded a game-high 11 rebounds along with nine points.
Barry (6-10, 4-5 SSC) was led by Juhnae Richardson with a game-high 17 points. She was helped by Nichel Tampa's 13 points and Ida Andersson with 10 points. In the mix, Emma Hergot earned a team-high six rebounds.
How It Happened
- Saint Leo jumped out to a 9-2 lead over Barry and held a seven-point advantage until 4:42. The Bucs tied the game after a seven-point run to bring the game to 11-11. Barry grabbed the lead for the first time of the game off a layup at 2:55. The quarter came to a close with the Lions trailing 17-14.
- The second quarter held costly turnovers and missed three-pointers for the Lions. During the Lions offensive woes, the Bucs wasted no time adding to their lead. The visitors registered eight more points, bringing the game to 25-14, the first double-digit lead of the game.
- Gallagher got to work in the paint. Her pair of layups slashed the gap back down to five points; 25-20 at 5:41. After a quiet two-minutes, Barry registered five more points over Saint Leo's lone point from Anna Tagye on the line. Saint Leo entered halftime down 35-21.
- Royster, Wortley, and Madelin Lang's buckets brought the game within single figures; 36-27. Lang snagged a steal to bring the ball to the opposite coast. Wortley was fouled shooting from beyond the arch. The forward sunk all three shots at the line; 38-32 at 5:17. Barry briefly revisited a double-digit lead until Lough caught on fire for the Lions. Lough went on her own six-point run to close out the third quarter; 46-42.
- Saint Leo and Barry battled basket-for-basket. Saint Leo closed the gap to 55-55 off Casey Wortley's jumper at 1:57. The Lions put up a jumper, layup and two three-pointers but none sat down for the Green and Gold. Meanwhile, Barry took the game at the free throw line with five charity points for the 60-55 final.
