Tampa, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team fell 59-46 to Tampa on Wednesday. The Lions were unable to recover from a 15-point lead tallied by the Spartans in the first half. Saint Leo rallied in the third quarter, putting together a 10-point run after the break. Despite the efforts, the Lions were forced to take the loss.
The Saint Leo (7-9, 2-6 SSC) offense was headed by
Casey Wortley with 14-points. Wortley went 5-for-10 from the field while sinking 4-of-7 three-point shots. She added four rebounds and an assist to her night.
Asia Royster joined Wortley in double-figure scoring with 11 points and four rebounds.
Tampa (11-5, 5-3 SSC) was paced by Staja Tyghter and Dori Nagy with 15 points apiece. Tyghter paired her 16
th straight double-figure scoring game with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Lauren Kotey helped in the victory with 10 grabs of the glass.
How It Happened
- Alani Gallagher drained a game-opener three-pointer to open against Tampa. The Lions struggled to add to the quick points hitting an eight-minute scoring drought. Saint Leo turnovers allowed Tampa to rack up a 12-point run. Gina Brierley drove the ball to the left side of the rim to snap the Lions cold streak, 12-5. The Spartans snuck a buzzer beater from downtown bringing the score to 15-5 after the first quarter.
- Tampa ran away from Saint Leo in the second quarter. The Spartan's 7-point run extended their lead to 17 points at 26-9 at 3:30. Olivia Lough's three-pointer helped cut the gap to 14 points. Gallagher added a bucket from the charity stripe before the break for a halftime score of 28-13.
- Saint Leo displayed a complete team-effort in the third to cut Tampa's lead to a bucket. Royster, Wortley and Brierley led the Lions' charge to record a 10-point run, 28-25.
- Tampa drew a foul and made the first of the pair. The second, rolled of the iron and was collected by Madelin Lang. Saint Leo set up Casey Wortley beyond the arch. Wortley's three-pointer brought the game to single possession, 29-26 at 6:13 in the third.
- Despite the big 18-point third quarter rally, Saint Leo trailed 42-31 entering the fourth.
- Another bucket from downtown by Wortley followed by a Brierley free throw handed the rivals a seven-point game, 42-35. Tampa answered the Lions threat with an eight-point run of their own, moving the score to 50-35 with 4:27 left on the clock.
- The Spartans held onto the double-digit lead for the rest of the game on their way to a 59-46 final.
