Kinberger leads Saint Leo to fourth straight 30-win season; #24 Softball sweeps series vs Bucs

Head Coach Erin Kinberger guided the Lions to its fourth straight 30-win season with two wins Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – With the twinbill sweep Saturday, Saint Leo head coach Erin Kinberger has guided the softball program to its fourth straight 30-win season. The Lions improve to 31-10, 15-9 Sunshine State Conference after sweeping the two games and series over the Barry Buccaneers with a 10-1 game one, in six innings, and a 7-1 series finale.

The series sweep marks the second SSC series of the year the Green and Gold have swept their opponents. In her coaching career, Erin Kinberger has guided her programs to 30 wins in six of her seven years of coaching, two years Fort Hays State and four years at Saint Leo.

On the day, three pitchers saw action where Auria Mounts proved most dominate on the day with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Mounts gave up three hits and one run, holding opponents to a .158 average. Alison Mitts came in for relief in game two and picked up the win after 5.1 innings of work allowing no runs for a 0.00 ERA. Mitts gave up four hits but held opponents scoreless.

Sara Neuman started game three and went 1.2 innings giving up three hits and one run before handing the ball off to Mitts.

Sarah Pauscher lifted the Lions on the day form the plate with a .750 batting average with six hits in eight at-bats and four runs scored. Pauscher hit two doubles and two triples, between the two games while driving in four runs.

Bailey McKenna and Kacie Kelly each tallied three hits against Barry Saturday where Ashley Morris and Shyanne DuBois recorded two hits apiece. Bailey Burk went 1-for-1 from the plate, tying Brittany Creamer, Ciara McCoy and Sommer Pollard with one hit.

Game One - #24 Saint Leo 10, Barry 1 (6 innings)
Auria Mounts held the Buccaners to just three hits and a solo home run in game one of the afternoon where the Lions scored 10 runs to the Bucs one, yielding the game in six innings.

Saint Leo scored one run in the first inning as Sarah Pauscher singled up the middle to score Kacie Kelly. The Lions added three runs in the second, third and sixth innings to take game one 10-1 in six innings.

Mounts would close the door on her complete game win with three strikeouts; despite the Buccaneers efforts to pinch-hit different batters in the bottom of the sixth. Mounts struck out the side in the bottom half to end the game.

Game Two - #24 Saint Leo 7, Barry 1
Saint Leo would score first for the third straight game against the Bucs as Shyanne DuBois doubled to right field scoring Ashley Morris to kick things off in the first inning. Barry would answer back with an RBI-single in the bottom half of the first, tying things at 1-1.

Alison Mitts came in for relief for Sara Neuman in the second inning, as the Bucs were threatening with one on and two outs. Mitts would hold the Bucs scoreless, as the Lions were scoreless as well for the second and third innings.

Bailey McKenna's sacrifice fly out to center field would break the tie as Pauscher came in to push the Green and Gold ahead 2-1.

Two more scoreless frames for the Lions were followed by a five-run seventh for Saint Leo. A fielding error by the Bucs' shortstop allowed DuBois to reach and Bailey Burk to score. Pauscher's single to right field score Morris and Kelly while moving DuBois to third.

A random play where Pauscher advanced to second saw DuBois score on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 6-1 Saint Leo. A frazzled Barry pitcher, would allow Pauscher to score on a wild pitch, for what would be the final run of the game; Saint Leo 7-1.

Mitts came out for the seventh inning and recorded the first out with a pop up to short before a walk allowed a runner aboard. A fielding error for the Lions allowed two base runners before a sacrifice bunt pushed the runners to second and third.

The senior from Belleville, Ill. retired the final batter with another pop up to third.

Up Next …
Saint Leo will take a week off before returning to action when the Lions travel to Tampa to take on the Spartans on April 20-21.
