Thomas Grinberg and head coach
Chad Berryhill of the Saint Leo men's tennis team were named Player and Coach of the Year, respectively, by the Sunshine State Conference Friday afternoon. The Lions appeared on the All-SSC award list seven times throughout the singles and doubles team honors.
Thomas Grinberg was awarded the SSC Player of the Year following a 19-0 regular season singles record and 15-3 first doubles record with
Vincent Suillerot. Grinberg is the second student-athlete from Saint Leo to win the Player of the Year title in men's tennis. Among SSC competition, Grinberg posted an 8-0 first singles performance along with a perfect 8-0 first doubles record with partner
Vincent Suillerot.
Saint Leo second year head coach
Chad Berryhill was named the 2018 SSC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year leading the Lions to a 19-0 regular season record as the SSC Regular Season Champions. Berryhill and the Lions will host the NCAA South Regionals with a 21-1 overall record. Under his direction, Saint Leo improved from an ITA No. 8 Division II ranking in 2017 to a No. 1 ranking. Berryhill has compiled a 34-6 record since taking over the Saint Leo men's tennis program. Off the court, he has lead the Lions in participating in events such as the "Love One Another" program of Dade City, Habitat for Humanity and teaching Physical Education classes at the local elementary school. On the campus of Saint Leo, Berryhill established an on-campus "tennis group", "Meet the Lions" Tennis Clinic for Saint Leo Faculty and a Lions Tennis Supporters group.
Vincent Suillerot and
Jaime Bueno were also named to the singles first-team. Suillerot finished the year on a seven-match win streak adding up to 15-2 second singles record. Bueno did not drop a match during the competition in the regular season. The senior out of Santiago, Chile registered a 17-0 singles record from a 16-0 third singles season and adding a 1-0 record at second singles.
Thomas Grinberg and
Vincent Suillerot earned first-team doubles honors for their work during the regular season. The first doubles team showcased a 15-3 record together, finishing the season on a nine-match win streak.
Jaime Bueno and
Willem Van Den Akker grabbed second-team doubles honors. The duo compiled a 15-2 record together going 12-2 at second doubles after a 3-0 record in third doubles.
Up next the Lions host the NCAA South Regionals as the No. 2 Seed on Monday, April 30. Saint Leo will face No. 7 Seed Palm Beach Atlantic at 10:00 a.m. at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
