SAINT LEO, Fla. – No. 18 Saint Leo baseball battled the visiting Tiffin Dragons closely in both ends of the twinbill, where the Lions came out on top by one run in each game, 1-0 and 6-5 at Thomas B. Southard Stadium. The Green and Gold improved to 15-2 on the year after the two wins Tuesday.
Shane Haight and
Drew Tumbelty picked up wins on the day where
Peyton Isaacson tacked on another save to his season total. Haight tossed the complete shutout in game one where Tumbelty pitched one inning in game two where he was the assumed pitcher of record before Isaacson came in for the final inning.
Haight struck out five batters on the day while allowing five hits. Tumbelty struck out the side in the top of the eighth in game two where Isaacson,
Joey Antonopoulos and
Ryan Nolan all tallied one strikeout.
Derek Gibree paced the Green and Gold from the plate with two runs scored on a 2-for-3 night for a .667 batting average. Gibree notched one of the Lions' three doubles, joined by
Aaron Portee and
Peyton Isaacson.
Zach Scott hit the lone triple of the day where he hit a shot to the left center gap and slid into third.
Amir Wright,
Chase Turner, Portee, Scott, and Isaacson were all credited with a run on the night joining Gibree's two for the Green and Gold's seven runs of the night.
Game One - #18 Saint Leo 1, Tiffin 0
In game one, Saint Leo was able to score the lone run in the bottom of the sixth of the seven-inning game. Isaacson led off the sixth inning with a walk before
Brett Coffel moved him over on a sacrifice bunt.
Chase Turner singled up the middle to score Isaacson for the game-winning run.
Haight came in for the top of the seventh, and allowed a single to start things off before a sacrifice bunt moved the tying run to second. A brilliant play by
Zach Scott saved the game, as a bloop single in right field allowed the Dragons' runner to round third and head for home. Scott picked up the ball in shallow right field, and threw out the runner with plenty of time at the plate. Haight got the final out with a groundout.
Game Two - #18 Saint Leo 6, Tiffin 5
In game two, the Dragons looked to have it locked up as they jumped all over the Lions with three runs in the first two innings. Not shook up at all by the three-run deficit, Saint Leo battled back, scoring three runs in the third to tie things at 3-3.
Tiffin would tack on two more in the fifth inning before the Lions answered right back with two themselves. Isaacson led off with a double to left center. After reaching on a fielder's choice,
Chase Turner came all the way from first to cut things to 5-4 on a triple to left center by
Zach Scott. Scott would tie things on a wild pitch.
Tumbelty came in and worked a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth inning allowing the Lions to do damage in the bottom half.
Derek Gibree would reach via a hit-by-pitch before moving over on a single and a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a balk.
Isaacson moved from first base to the mound to earn the save after working a 1-2-3 inning himself with a pop up to Scott, strike out and a ground out to Scott.
