SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 13 Saint Leo women's tennis team fell short 7-2 against No. 2 Barry on Saturday at the Saint Leo Tennis Center. The Sunshine State Conference loss moves Saint Leo's overall record to 3-2, 1-2 in the conference.
"I am happy with how our team competed in singles," said Head Coach
Chad Berryhill. "Barry is the defending National Champions so this was a great measuring stick for our young team."
Berryhill continued, "I was very impressed with Marta Vincens Miquel today. She was ready to compete from when the first ball was hit starting in doubles and ha Sonja Larsen on the ropes. Larsen is ranked No. 1 in the country and through her four years you could count her losses on one hand. So, it was great to see how Marta handled that match. She has a bright future as a Lion!"
"
Kristyna Jurkova in singles was equally as impressive. She got a good win at number two. Her game is really starting to get to another level," expressed Berryhill.
Barry was able to take all three doubles matches.
Marta Vicens Miquel battled in first singles but dropped the three set contest; 2-6, 6-3, 5-10.
Kristyna Jurkova earned the second singles in three sets; 6-1, 6-7, 10-5.
Andrada Gordan defeated her sixth singles opponent, also in a three set decision; 6-2, 5-7, 10-4.
The Lions return to the court on Saturday, March 3 at 10:00 a.m. to host Flagler at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
