Lions Grab 50-42 Victory at Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team enjoyed a 50-42 victory over Flagler, who is ranked seventh in the southeast region, in the Lions' first road trip of the year on Tuesday. Saint Leo improved its overall record to 2-2 while Flagler fell to 4-2. 

Casey Wortley tallied a season-high 14 points along with five rebounds, two blocks and an assist. She was supported by Alani Gallagher with nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Gina Brierley helped with eight points, five rebounds and seven assists.

"It was a great evening to be a Lion," exclaimed head coach Anthony Crocitto. "Alani and Casey worked well together and were focused on our scheme."
 
Crocitto continued, "Montia Moon had two huge threes, while Asia Royster gave us energy and fight late."

 
How It Happened
  • Saint Leo jumped out to a 15-5 start over Flagler, led by Alani Gallagher with eight points, while Gina Brierley and Casey Wortley each had six points. Madelin Lang added three assists in the strong start.
  • Saint Leo saw its' largest lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter; 17-5. The Saints chipped away at the Lions lead in the remainder of the stanza. Flagler edged Saint Leo in the second, 11-9, for a halftime score of 24-16 in favor of Saint Leo. 
  • A five-point run regained a double-digit advantage for the Lions, produced by Abby Zeitsiff three-pointer and Casey Wortley layup. Wortley caught fire under the bucket, showcasing back-to-back layups. Her work kept the lead in the Lions favor after three; 40-31.
  • The Saint's opening fourth quarter six-point run, trimmed the Lions' lead to four points; 40-36. Asia Royster's  and-one conversion snapped the Lions' five-minute scoring drought before going on for the win. 
 
Up Next
The Lions stay on the road to open play in the Sunshine State Conference. Saint Leo will travel to Eckerd on Wednesday, November 28 for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
