Lions Ledger: Men's soccer hosts Lynn in conference action

Volleyball hits the road for a pair of SSC matches, women's soccers heads to Boca Raton, and cross country competes at Disney

Volleyball Notes
  • The Lions take a pair of win streaks on the road this weekend as they have won five-straight over the Tars of Rollins and four-straight over the Spartans.
  • It's been a four person show for the Lions offensively during Sunshine State Conference play this season with sophomore Ashley Quero (2.91 kps) and juniors Nina Vattovaz (2.68 kps), Annabella Arcari (2.46 kps) and Victoria Omoregie (2.41 kps) leading the Lions while freshman Cassandra Kamien (10.77 aps) has been running the offense as the setter.
  • Rollins enters Friday night's match having lost seven-straight matches all by scores of 3-0. The Tars last win came September 8 versus Florida Tech. Senior Kerra Tirado has led the team in SSC play this season with 43 kills and 18 blocks over their nine conference matches.
  • Tampa recently moved to No. 8 in the AVCA Coaches Poll. The Spartans have won 10-straight and are 16-1 overall on the season. Their lone loss came at the hands of Drury in a five-set affair at home. The Spartans have a pair of hitters averaging over 3.0 kills per set including Katie McKiel (3.90) and Sorrel Houghton (3.44).

Cross Country Notes
  • Saint Leo returns to action at the Disney Cross Country Classic in Orlando where men and women both look to build on last year's third place finish. 
  • The last time out, the Lions ran at the prestigious Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa., where the men's team took 17th of 44 teams and the women 29th of 43 teams. 
  • Clement Goujon paced the Green and Gold with a 77th place finish out of 362 total runners in a time of 26:28. 
  • Laura Tobin led the pack for the women's race with a 42nd place finish in a time of 22:49.

Women's Soccer Notes
  • Saint Leo posted a two-goal first half against the Eckerd Tritons on Wednesday. Despite the strong start, Eckerd stole the game, converting a penalty kick awarded in the 101st minute of action.
  • Carolina Solis-Deleon and Laura Hallissey each marked up the stat sheet. Solis-Deleon's goal improved her season count to four. Hallissey's assist to Solis-Deleon, along with her own goal, increased her offensive season to one goal, two assists. The pair of strikers lead the Lions' offense.
  •  In goal, Julia Ortiz has tallied 36 saves. The junior goalkeeper has faced 81 shots while accumulating a .667 save percentage.
  • Lynn suffered a 3-1 loss from Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday. The Fighting Knights carry a five-game losing skid as they prepare to host the Lions.  
  • Felicia Silveira scored the lone Fighting Knights' goal in the 49th minute, her first goal of the season.
  • Morgan Meltzer leads the Blue and White offense with three goals, two assists.
  • Three goalkeepers have shared the responsibilities in net for the Fighting Knights. On Wednesday, Gabriela Lopez took the loss, despite her seven save performance.

Men's Soccer Notes
  • Saint Leo saw Haydn Dickinson tally a two-goal performance at Eckerd on Wednesday. Despite the senior midfielder's big day, the Lions fell 4-2.
  • Elias Niesigk leads the Saint Leo offense with eight points from two goals, four assists.
  • Mathis Hardy enters the game with six points from two goals, two assists.
  • Goalkeeper, Wessel Berenschot, has faced 78 shots, making 31 stops for a .705 save percentage
  • Lynn upset #2 Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday, 1-0, to extend the Fighting Knights' win streak to five. Jack Watson netted the 77th minute game-winner.
  • Lynn's five-straight have all come about by shutouts led by Roberto Bazzichetto in goal. Bazzichetto visits the Saint Leo Soccer Field with nine saves on the season, a .643 save percentage.
  • Fighting Knights' leading scorer, Shay Brennan, has punched in four goals, one assist. He is followed by Niklas Tasky with two goals and two assists.
