Brierley’s career day not enough for women's basketball at Barry

Miami Shores, Fla. – Gina Brierley's career-high 24-point performance saw women's basketball fall short at Barry; 72-54 on Wednesday.

Down by one, 40-39 at 4:36 in the third quarter, Saint Leo was overwhelmed by Barry's second half offensive explosion of 44 points, led by four Buccaneers finishing with double figure scoring.

"I thought it was a great night for Gina Brierley as she represented across the stat line while playing solid team basketball on both ends," said head coach Anthony Crocitto. He continued, "I was proud of our effort but in the end Barry was too much on the road."

1Q | Gina Brierley converted a free throw to tie the game, 5-5 at 6:24. Day Jackson's jumper handed Saint Leo its first lead of the game in the next possession; 7-5. 2Q | Izabell Skoogh three cut Barry's lead to 22-19 at 9:19. The Lions' defense forced four Buccaneer turnovers in the first four minutes of the second quarter. Brierley three from by Mary Redmond moved the game to one possession; Barry 25-22 at 3:44. Points to Note
  • Gina Brierley scored 11 points in the first half, she finished the game as the Lions leading point scorer with 24, going 6-11 from the field, 5-8 in three-pointers, 7-7 on the free throw line. She added four rebounds and four assists and a steal to her career-high night.
  • Day Jackson tallied nine points and a block
  • Mary Redmond returned to the hardwood after an injury early this season.
For Barry
  • Scoring was led by Barbara Cousino with 15 points supported by Juhnae Richardson (14), Kiara Palmer (13) and Harriet Swindells (10). Cousino went 5-10 from the field, 2-4 around the circle, 3-3 on the free throw line. In addition, she added seven rebounds, two assists and three steals to her performance.
  • Ida Andersson was the big presence inside for the Bucs. She finished the night with nine rebounds. Palmer helped
  • Team outrebounded the Lions 52-30, and scored 29 points off the bench compared to Saint Leo's 10 off the bench.
Saint Leo will enjoy a bye weekend, before returning to action on Wednesday, January 10 at home against Florida Tech at 5:30 p.m.
