MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – No. 20 Saint Leo volleyball traveled to the Health & Sports Center on the campus of Barry University. The Lions moved to 3-1 in the Sunshine State Conference after a 3-1 (25-21, 26-24, 20-25, 25-18) win against the Buccaneers.
Saint Leo improved to 8-1 overall after the win and was led by
Ashley Quero and
Victoria Omoregie who each tallied double-digit kills with 15 and 12, respectively.
Britt Sederholm added nine kills as
Annabella Arcari notched seven.
Fabiola Rosado and
Reggie Van Devender recorded three service aces on the night where Sederholm and
Jenya Kruglova tied for team lead with 11 digs.
Anna Garrett paced the Lions on the night with 41 assists moving her season total to 311. As a team, the Lions finished the night with 48 kills with 10 aces, 44 assists and 44 digs. The Green and Gold finished with a .212 hitting percentage on the night.
Saint Leo 25-21 | The first set between the Lions and Buccaneers was a tight back-and-forth set with the Bucs claiming a late three point lead 17-14 before Saint Leo charged back to tie things at 18-18. Saint Leo and Barry both claimed a lead late in the set where the Lions went up 19-18 before the Bucs led 20-19. An attack error by the Bucs put the Lions up 21-20 before a kill evened things at 21-21. Saint Leo would close out the opening set on a 5-0 run with two aces from
Reggie Van Devender and a kill by
Annabella Arcari.
Saint Leo 26-24 | Saint Leo jumped out to a 3-0 lead after
Anna Garrett started things off with an ace followed by a kill from
Victoria Omoregie. A ball handling error on the Bucs' Juliana Tirabassi put the Lions up early in the second set. A kill from
Ashley Quero tied things at 12-12 in another tight set before the Lions went up by two points after back-to-back errors on the Bucs. Out of a Barry timeout, Garrett picked up another ace, pushing the lead to three, 15-12. Both teams would battle it out before the Lions could squeak out a 26-24 second set win, to move to a 2-0 lead.
Barry 25-20 | Coming out of the break, Barry came out firing going up 4-1 and 5-2 after an error. Saint Leo would battle back to tie things at 11-11 after three straight service aces from
Fabiola Rosado. The Bucs would regain momentum and charge out to a six point lead 23-17 before taking the third set by five.
Saint Leo 25-18 | The Bucs would once again go out to an early lead after two attack errors by the Lions put Barry up 3-0.
Britt Sederholm's kill put the Lions up 5-4 after battling back from down in the set early. Saint Leo ripped off seven straight points with three kills to take a commanding 16-7 lead. The Panthers would close to within five points late in the set before
Britt Sederholm landed two kills to push the Lions up 23-17 and 24-17. With match point on the line, Barry's Jaeda Allen missed the mark and Saint Leo won 25-18.
The Lions remain on the east coast as they will play Nova Southeastern tomorrow at 4 p.m. inside the Rick Case Arena in Fort Lauderdale. Saint Leo will return to the Bay Area to take on Eckerd on Oct. 3 before a home match on Oct. 6 against Lynn for Alumni Day, where the alumni game and reception will be on Oct. 7.
