FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – No. 20 Saint Leo returned to the Rick Case Arena and improved their season record on the Nova Southeastern home court to 5-0 after a three set win over the Sharks (25-16, 25-15, 25-13) on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Lions move to 9-1 and 4-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.
Britt Sederholm led the Lions' offense, who tallied a .344 clip for the match, with nine kills on a .222 hitting percentage. Four players were on Sederholm's heels in kills with
Ashley Quero at eight,
Dallas Jasper at seven,
Anna Garrett with six and
Annabella Arcari with five.
Garrett tallied 21 assists on the night where
Maddy Powell chipped in with eight. Sederholm, who was one kill shy of double-digits, recorded 10 digs on the night.
Jenya Kruglova led the team with 12 digs where
Reggie Van Devender notched nine and
Nina Vattovaz had seven.
Saint Leo 25-16 | The first set saw five early ties where the two teams were knotted up at 6-6 before the Lions went on a 6-2 run to take a 12-8 lead. The Sharks would get to within two, 12-10, after a service error and an attack error before Saint Leo answered with a 5-0 run forcing a timeout by Nova Southeastern, 15-10. The Lions would come out of the timeout and go up by another five points after four kills by
Dallas Jasper,
Reggie Van Devender,
Ashley Quero and
Anna Garrett allowed the Lions to move to a 20-10 lead and another Shark timeout. Kruglova, who had served for the Lions since 13-10, put the Green and Gold up 21-10 after she came out of the timeout with a service ace. NSU would close to eight before
Britt Sederholm put it away from
Anna Garrett for the 25th point.
Saint Leo 25-15 | After the Lions climbed out to a 4-3 lead, they would push to an early 19-9 lead with back-to-back kills from
Ashley Quero as
Maddy Powell set her up perfectly. Saint Leo would go up 21-9 on a service ace by Powell before the Sharks outscored the Lions 6-4 over the remainder of the second set.
Saint Leo 25-13 | Saint Leo and Nova Southeastern opened the third set up close with three ties to get to 6-6. The Lions would gain a 7-6 lead and would push out to a 13-10. Saint Leo would go on a 7-2 run to take a 20-12 lead before a Nova Southeastern timeout attempted to slow the Lions momentum and
Britt Sederholm, who had served four straight points before the timeout.
Ashley Quero notched two of the final three kills for the Lions where
Dallas Jasper's kill captured the match.
Saint Leo will return to the Bay Area to take on Eckerd on Oct. 3 before a home match on Oct. 6 against Lynn for Alumni Day, where the alumni game and reception will be on Oct. 7.
