SAINT LEO, Fla. – No. 23 Saint Leo volleyball defeated the Eckerd Tritons in five set, 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 27-29, 25-18, 15-8) in a Sunshine State Conference match inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center behind
Britt Sederholm's career-night.
Saint Leo (19-5, 13-3 SSC) completed the season sweep of Eckerd (14-10, 7-9 SSC) after the 3-2 win on its home court. The Lions add their 3-2 win to their 3-1 win in St. Petersburg on Oct. 3.
There would be five combined double-doubles in the match, but none as sweet as senior
Britt Sederholm's career-night on the defensive end. Sederholm, an outside hitter from Ogden, Utah, put away 20 kills on the night as the senior scooped up a career-high 32 digs to finish off her eighth double-double of the season, while adding two assists and one block.
Anna Garrett recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 52 assists and 13 digs. Garrett tallied 52 assists on 165 attempts on the night, while adding four kills and two blocks.
Dallas Jasper slammed down 14 kills from the middle on a .333 clip to lead all hitters where
Jenya Kruglova helped Sederholm pace the defensive with 20 digs.
Reggie Van Devender added 17 digs where the four, Sederholm, Kruglova, Van Devender, and Garrett helped hold the Tritons to a .133 team hitting percentage.
Annabella Arcari got a block party started where she tallied six blocks, two solo and four assists.
Eckerd saw four players hit in double-digits with Madison Whiting leading the way with 14 kills. Mackenzie Redner added 13 as Paula Hoffmann chipped in with 11 and Abbie O'Ferrell with 10.
Fernanda Reis recorded a double-double with 44 assists and 16 digs where O'Ferrell finished her double-double with 14 digs and her 10 kills. Arielle Erillo paced the defense with 26 digs, one ahead of Kaitlyn Sibson at 25. Paula Hoffmann's 13 digs gave her a double-double on the night with her 11 kills on the attack.
Saint Leo 25-22 | Saint Leo came out strong in the opening portion of the first set as
Ashley Quero put one down to get things started for the first point. The two teams would play back and forth with nine ties in the first half of the set before Saint Leo could claim a 16-13 lead, forcing the Tritons to call time. Eckerd would rally to tie things late in the set, 21-21, and again at 22-22 before
Britt Sederholm tallied two straight kills to put the Green and Gold up 24-22. An attack error by the Tritons would award the Lions the opening set by three.
Eckerd 25-22 | The Tritons started the second out with the command before dropping the advantage when Saint Leo took a 4-3 lead on
Annabella Arcari's kill. The two teams would exchange the lead and tie things three times before Eckerd could move out to a three point lead, 15-12, forcing a Saint Leo timeout. The Lions would gain a little momentum with mental lapses on the Tritons behalf allowing Saint Leo to close the gap to 17-15 forcing a timeout. Eckerd would run the score back to a four point set at 20-16. The Lions would again close to within two points on three occasions out of their timeout before the Tritons called their second, leading 23-21. Eckerd would take the set to tie things on two kills from Stephanie Karlovics and Mackenzie Redner.
Eckerd 29-27 | The third set looked as if the Lions were going to run away with the set as the Green and Gold doubled the score rather quickly on the Tritons 12-6, forcing the visiting team to burn their first timeout. After a short closure by the Tritons, Saint Leo called timeout leading Eckerd 15-12. Out of the timeout, Eckerd would tie things at 17-17.
Victoria Omoregie would end the Tritons run with a kill before the two teams exchanged points. The Lions held a late 23-21 lead, where Eckerd used back-to-back kills to tie things at 23-23. Once the Tritons claimed a 24-23 lead, Saint Leo played from behind tying things at 24's, 25's, 26's and 27's, failing to tie it at 28-28, but instead Eckerd took the chance and went on for the two point win to take a 2-1 lead.
Saint Leo 25-18 | A sloppy first half of the fourth set saw four straight service errors keep things tied at 4-4. A ball handling error on the Tritons and back-to-back kills for Saint Leo from
Anna Garrett and
Nina Vattovaz allowed for Saint Leo to gain a 7-4 lead, and an Eckerd timeout followed. Saint Leo saw
Reggie Van Devender serve the next five points with two aces allowing for the Lions to take a 12-6 lead, before pushing it to 18-7 with a 6-1 run. Despite getting outscored over the final half of the set, Saint Leo would tie things at 2-2 with a seven point margin.
Saint Leo 15-8 | With momentum still on the home teams side, Eckerd attempted to take the momentum away keeping things close in the opening portion with a 1-1 and 3-3 ties. After an attack error by the Tritons,
Reggie Van Devender subbed in and would serve seven straight Saint Leo points, even thru a timeout by Eckerd. The Tritons would cut the deficit in half with back-to-back service aces, where the Lions held a 12-7 lead and called timeout.
Britt Sederholm registered her 20
th kill of the night to end the Tritons run and push the Lions to a 13-7 lead. Saint Leo would see
Jenya Kruglova serve an ace, 14-7, before Eckerd would see a ball long and wide of the court end things in Saint Leo's favor.
Saint Leo returns to action Nov. 9 when the Lions travel to Boca Raton to take on Lynn at 7 p.m. The Green and Gold return on Nov. 17 to host Florida Tech at 7 p.m.
