Lions Ledger: Five teams in action for Saint Leo athletics; Volleyball hosts FSC Tuesday

Women's Golf Notes
  • Saint Leo women's golf heads to Palm Beach Gardens to play in the Nova Southeastern University GolfRank Invitational at the PGA National Golf Club. The women's tournament will be held on the Fazio Course, a par 72, 6,806-yard course that was last redesigned in 2012.
  • The Lions are coming off a second place finish at the UNC Pembroke "Battle at Old South" on September 24, held at the Old South Golf Links (par 72, 5,874 yards) in Bluffton, S.C. Saint Leo carded a 590 (+14) over the 36-hole tournament, which was won by Savannah College of Art & Design. SCAD's victory ended Saint Leo's run of three straight championships at the Battle at Old South.
  • Senior Amanda Jakobsson took medalist honors at the Battle at Old South, firing a four-under 68 in the second round to finish atop the leaderboard with a four-under 140. The individual title was the Jakobsson's second on the Old South course and the third of her collegiate career. She was rewarded with Sunshine State Conference Women's Golfer of the Week honors for the first time in her collegiate career on the following Monday.
  • Jakobsson is currently pacing the Lions with a 74.25 stroke average over four rounds, with freshman Synne Lauritzen not far off that pace with a 74.75 stroke average. Freshman Isabel Nesteus, sophomore Izzy Lawrence, and senior Vilde Eriksen are all averaging approximately 78 strokes per round. As a four-player team, the Lions have averaged 303.25 and 15 strokes over par.

  • Individual: Alex Velez
  • The Field: 13 teams will be joining Saint Leo in the field, including 2017 NCAA South Super Regional participants Nova Southeastern, Barry, Florida Tech, Lynn, Rollins, and West Florida. Rounding out the field will be Embry-Riddle, Florida Southern, Johnson & Wales (Fla.), Keiser, Merrimack (Mass.), Palm Beach Atlantic, and Tampa. Florida Southern is defending champion of the NSU GolfRank Invitational, after carding a 595 (+19) in last year's event. FSC's Tori Higgins took medalist honors a year ago after firing an even-par 144 for the tournament.

#10 Men's Golf Notes
  • Saint Leo men's golf heads to the Nova Southeastern GolfRank Invitational at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens after taking third at the Cougar Invitational on Sept. 25-26.
  • The Lions finished with a team score of 848 (-4) after three rounds of play with round scores of 284-286-278. Alberto Castagnara turned in a four-under 67 on Sept. 26 to finish tied for fourth with a 209 (-4) overall score.

Women's Soccer Notes
  • Saint Leo enters its midweek matchup with a 2-5, 3-4 SSC mark after snapping a three game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Lynn on Oct. 7. The Lions saw Angelina Troche lace a shot from six-yards out after Jelani Ashley served up a long cross.
  • The Lions held onto their 1-0 lead after the 54th minute goal from Troche.
  • Victoria Covas leads the Lions on the year with two goals where Rosie Young paces the team in assists with three. Five Lions have scored one goal on the year with Troche, Rebecca Anderson, Sofie Haellsten, Kirsten Cleveland, and Payton Ruehling.
  • Julia Ortiz has played six games between the posts with a 2-4 record as Megan Charlton is 1-1 in two games played. Charlton has tallied 11 saves and allowed just one goal where Ortiz stands at 19 saves and 10 goals allowed.  
  • Lenoir-Rhyne enters Tuesday's match with a 7-3-1 record and on a two game win streak. In their most recent outing, the Bears defeated Anderson 3-1 on Oct. 7.
  • On the year, Abbie Brown paces the Bears in 11 games with five goals ahead of both Hannah Van Eerden and Abigael McGarel with three goals each.
  • Alayna Morris has started all 11 games in goal with 929:48 minutes played with 33 saves and nine goals allowed. Morris holds a 7-3-1 record with four shutouts on the season.

Volleyball Notes
  • Volleyball hosts Florida Southern for a make-up match from Sept. 16.
  • The Lions enter at 11-1, 6-1 SSC after a 2-0 week in the conference with a 3-1 win over Eckerd on Oct. 3 and a 3-1 win on Oct. 6 over Lynn.
  • In the win over Lynn, Britt Sederholm posted a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Annabella Arcari led the Lions with 11 kills, where Dallas Jasper added 10. Jenya Kruglova and Reggie Van Devender joined Sederholm in double-digit digs with 16 and 12, respectively. Anna Garrett led the way with 42 assists on the night.
  • Ashley Quero leads Saint Leo on the year with 127 kills where Victoria Omoregie climbed into the 100 kill column after she added six against Lynn.
  • Garrett paces the Lions with 411 assists where Kruglova has 26 and Maddy Powell owns 20. Kruglova leads the team on the year with 161 digs ahead of Sederholm at 87. Arcari is the team leader in blocks with 40, six solo and 34 assists.
  • Florida Southern enters on a two game win streak with a 3-0 sweep of Florida Tech on Oct. 6 and a 3-1 win over Embry-Riddle on Oct. 7 and stands at 9-6, 6-1 SSC.
  • The Moccasins are paced by Nicole Mattson who has tallied 230 kills on the season. Bethany Besancenez leads the team in assists with 628 where Gabby Fresh leads in 233 digs.

Men's Soccer Notes
  • Saint Leo heads to Melbourne to play the #24 Panthers in a rescheduled contest. The Lions 2-6-1, 1-3-1 SSC head across the state after a 1-0 loss to #4 Lynn on Oct. 7.
  • The Lions were tied 0-0 to the 74:02 mark before one goal would prove enough to settle the contest between the Fighting Knights and the Lions.
  • On the year, Guillaume Campos, Tyler Palmer and Hermon Constant lead the Lions with two goals apiece. Yuga Yanagisawa and Bryce Wilson each own one goal on the year.
  • Conor McElhinney has played 578:37 minutes between the posts and owns a 2-3-1 record. Wessel Berenschot holds an 0-3 record with 270 minutes played in goal. McElhinney has 28 saves on the year with one clean sheet.
  • Florida Tech enters the midweek matchup on a five-game win streak after posting back-to-back 2-1 wins over Florida Southern (Oct. 4) and Embry-Riddle (Oct. 7).
  • The Panthers are 4-0 in conference and only have one loss on the year; 2-1 setback on Sept. 8 to Alabama-Huntsville.
  • Brandon Smalley leads the Panthers with six goals on the year where Per Henrik Nag and Solomon Wheatley each have four goals.
  • Christopher Page stands at 6-1 on the year in 630:28 minutes played between the posts. Page has 18 saves and one clean sheet.
