Head softball coach Erin Kinberger announced the addition of Maddie Holub as an assistant coach on the Saint Leo University coaching staff in August 2014.
In three years as an assistant coach, Maddie Holub helped the Lions to back-to-back NCAA postseason appearances. Holub guided pitcher Stephanie Adkins to back-to-back Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Year honors while she saw five pitchers in three years earn All-SSC honors.
For the 2017 season, Holub directed the pitching staff to 14 shutouts on the year while they owned a core ERA of 1.98. On top of her SSC Pitcher of the Year honors, Stephanie Adkins was named First Team All-SSC and earned Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association All-America and All-South Region honors while earning NFCA All-South Region honors as well.
For the second straight year, Holub saw a pitcher earn CoSIDA Academic All-District V honors while Adkins went on to earn Academic All-American honors, following coach Holub’s footsteps – Holub was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2013 following her senior year at Fort Hays State where she played for coach Kinberger.
Holub helped guide the Lions to their second straight SSC title with a 17-7 record and head into the NCAA postseason for the second straight season. Saint Leo hosted the NCAA South Region 2, marking the first time in program history to host a regional.
In 2016 Holub turned in another stellar season in charge of the pitching staff at Saint Leo. In her second season as an assistant coach, she led her staff to a program-record 24 shutouts, breaking the previous record of 22 set in 2006. In two seasons, Holub took a staff that recorded 3 shutouts in 2014 and improved them to 18 in 2015 and now 24 in 2016.
The rotation was named the 2016 National Statistical Champion in earned run average with a staff ERA of 0.93. The Lions saw two pitchers end in the top-10 in the nation as Alana Tabel was second with a 0.66 and Stephanie Adkins was ninth with a 0.99.
Holub saw Stephanie Adkins and Alana Tabel earn All-Sunshine State Conference honors with Adkins being named the Pitcher of the Year and first team All-SSC and Tabel named second team All-SSC in 2016. The accolades didn’t stop there for Holub’s staff, off the field and in the classroom Samantha Tyler earned CoSIDA Academic All-District V honors.
Under Holub’s direction, Stephanie Adkins and Alana Tabel earned Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association All-South Region honors, as Adkins was named a D2CCA All-American. Adkins also was named an NFCA All-American in her first season at Saint Leo.
This past season, Holub saw Alana Tabel break the single-season individual record for ERA with a 0.66, breaking the previous set by Katie Heintz in 2005 when Heintz finished with a 0.74 ERA. The staff’s 0.93 broke the team record for a single season ERA which was previously a 1.07 in 2005.
In two years, Holub coached Alana Tabel into the record books at Saint Leo. Tabel improved her record after her freshman year to a 50-23 overall record and is currently first in program history in winning percentage with a .685. Tabel also climbed into the top-5 in three other career pitching categories – third in ERA at 1.54, fourth in shutouts with 20, and fifth in strikeouts with 315.
Following an impressive 2015 season, Holub was named the 2015 NFCA DII Assistant Coach of the Year.Â
In her first season as assistant coach at Saint Leo, Holub transformed the pitching staff into one of the best in Division II. She inherited a program that in 2014 pitched just 3 shutouts. One year later, with two of the returning staff, Â and the addition of a freshman, the group turned in a Saint Leo program record 18 season shutouts, including seven consecutive shutouts to conclude the regular season. The Lions 1.23 team ERA ranked second in Division II and the squad's highest individual ERA was a 1.53. Holub's rotation pitched 11-straight wins and 50-straight scoreless innings to finish the 2015 regular season and opponents hit a meager .176 Batting Average.
Individually, the Lions ranked first in nine statistical categories in the SSC, including boasting the nation-leading individual ERA at 0.94. In total, Saint Leo had three pitchers fall in the top-25 in the nation in ERA.

A former four-year standout for the Tigers, Holub was a 2013 NFCAÂ First-Team All-American and the first student-athlete in her conference to earn both MIAA Pitcher and Player of the Year in 2013.
Holub is the record holder at her alma mater in many statistical categories including career hits (255), career runs scored (183), career runs batted in (160), career home runs (46), career wins (77), and career strikeouts (974) after her four years with the program.
