SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team picked up a 3-1 victory over Mars Hill on Saturday night at Saint Leo Soccer Field in non-conference action.
The Lions improved to 2-1-1 on the season with the win, using an attack that saw three different players find the back of the net. Sophomore
Rodolfo Iguala, junior
Luis Gaitan, and junior
Virgilio Escala—all natives of Panama—accounted for Saint Leo's three goals.
Saint Leo struck first in the 22nd minute when Gaitan converted a chance off assists from Escala and Iguala to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage. Mars Hill answered just before halftime by finding the net in the 43rd minute to send the teams into the break tied at 1-1.
Saint Leo wasted little time reclaiming the lead after halftime. Iguala scored just 2:45 into the second period, putting the Green & Gold ahead 2-1 in the 48th minute.
Saint Leo continued to apply pressure throughout the second half before Escala provided the insurance goal in the 86th minute. Escala finished a feed from sophomore
Christian Getsos to push the Lions' advantage to 3-1, a lead they would carry through the final whistle.
Saint Leo finished with a 10-9 edge in shots and placed four attempts on target. The Green & Gold goalkeeper junior
Vincent Fournier turned in a strong performance between the posts, making five saves while allowing just one goal.
Saint Leo returns to the pitch on Thursday, September 10 as it hosts Florida Southern in a non-conference game starting at 7 p.m.
