Men’s Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw Against Tampa in SSC Opener

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw at home versus Tampa in their Sunshine State Conference (SSC) opener on Wednesday night.

In the first half, both teams struggled to maintain possession of the ball with neither team registering a goal. The Lions edged the Spartans on shots in the opening frame with a 3-1 margin while Tampa tallied three corner kicks without finding the net. At halftime, the teams were deadlocked at 0-0.

Most of the second half featured a defensive battle once again until, a Spartan corner kick turned into the first goal of the game in the 77th minute as Tampa led 1-0. The Lions quickly responded in the 82nd minute as junior Viktor Danielsson registered his second goal of the season to tie the game 1-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining.

For the remainder of the game, the Green & Gold continued to pressure Tampa with the ball in the attacking zone, however, Saint Leo did not find the net as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
In goal, junior Vincent Fournier notched one save, however, it was a crucial save on a penalty shot during the 85th minute.

The Lions will return to the pitch on Saturday, September 19 as they travel to Melbourne, Fla. to face off against Florida Tech in a conference bout starting at 7 p.m.
