#1 Softball Opens World Series with a Victory Over Eighth-Seeded St. Thomas Aquinas

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The top-ranked and top-seeded Saint Leo softball team opened the World Series on Thursday with a 4-2 victory over eighth-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas, in the process, the Lions ended a 23-game winning streak for the Spartans.

Senior catcher Hailey Beuerlein got the show started with a two-run homer to center field in the second inning as the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead. After a rain-delay in the top of the sixth, junior Alexis Barber knocked in a pair of runs on a double to center field as sophomore Tegan Larrimore and senior Briana Neal crossed home plate. In the seventh, the Spartans scored two runs, however, the Green & Gold held St. Thomas Aquinas at bay to secure the victory.

In the circle, senior Tierney Hocquard started and pitched a complete-game with six strikeouts. She surrendered two runs (both earned) on five hits.

Saint Leo will return to action tomorrow, Friday, May 29 as it will face either fourth-seeded Cal. State San-Marcos at 12 p.m.
