SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team won both games of its non-conference doubleheader versus Roosevelt on Saturday afternoon. The Lions picked up a 12-7 victory in game one followed by a 10-6 win in game two.
Game one featured an early offensive onslaught by the Lions that started in the first inning with an RBI-double from senior
Dylan Mass before senior
Ryan Crivello recorded an infield single to extend the Green & Gold lead to 2-0. In the second, the Lions put up five runs from a wild pitch, two-run double from senior
Thomas DeBrower, a run on a throwing error, and an RBI-single from junior
Abrahan Rios, 7-0.
During the third, DeBrower was hit by a pitch that knocked in a run followed by Mass recording an RBI-single through the left side, 9-0. Crivello gave the Lions a 10-0 cushion with a sacrifice-fly to left center that drove in redshirt freshman
Nate Tidwell.
Later in the fifth, the Lakers ignited for six runs, however, Saint Leo countered with a pair of runs in the eighth on an RBI-triple from Rios before Rios scored on a fielding error by Roosevelt, 12-6. The Lakers only mustered one run in the top of the ninth for the Lions to secure the win.
On the mound, senior
Matt Delph started and pitched 4.0 innings while he recorded three strikeouts in addition to allowing three runs (all earned) on one hit with three walks allowed. In relief, freshman
Collin Lock pitched 5.0 innings and struck out three and surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits to earn the win.
In game two, Crivello gave the Lions a 1-0 lead after a single through the left side. In the second, the Lakers scored two runs in the second to claim its first lead of the day. DeBrower tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI-single to left field. In the third, the Lions regained the lead and never looked back, Senior
Amai Rivera-Martinez drove in Crivello on a single up the middle followed by senior
Kevin Niedzwiedz knocking in two runs on a single to right center.
Roosevelt trimmed its deficit to 5-4 in the fifth before the Lions offense rattled off four runs in the seventh highlighted by an RBI-single from senior
Ryan Jackson as Saint Leo held a 9-4 margin. For the remainder of the game, the Lakers only scored two more runs as the Lions secured the victory.
On the mound, redshirt sophomore
Jake Rychter started and pitched 1.2 innings and struck out a batter while allowing two runs (both allowed) on two hits. In relief, junior
Cian Phillips pitched 6.1 innings. Phillips registered four strikeouts and surrendered four runs (three earned) on four hits.
The Lions return to action on Friday, March 13 as they travel to face Palm Beach Atlantic in a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) but, starting at 6 p.m.
