Baseball Takes Game One of Doubleheader at Florida Tech, Claims Series in the Process

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Saint Leo baseball team split its Sunshine State Conference (SSC) doubleheader at Florida Tech to conclude the series on Saturday evening. The Lions collected an 11-7 win in game one before dropping game two by a 5-2 margin.

In game one, senior Ryan Crivello gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the first inning as he recorded an RBI-single to left field that brought junior Luis Rivero across home plate. Junior Abrahan Rios knocked in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line to extend the Green & Gold cushion to 3-0. Saint Leo concluded the first inning with junior Camdin Jansen scored a run as Rios stole second, 4-0.

In the fourth on a full-count, Rivero laced a single to left field that scored a pair of runs as the Lions mounted a 6-0 advantage. In the fifth, the Panthers exploded for seven runs to claim a 7-6, however, Florida Tech were held runless for the remainder of the game followed by Crivello registering another RBI in the sixth with a double down the left field line to tie the game, 7-7.

In the eighth, the Lions grasped control of the game with four runs that started with a two-run single from Crivello followed by Jansen scoring senior Dylan Mass on a single to left field, 10-7. Crivello capped off the scoring frenzy with a run on a wild pitch, 11-7.

On the mound, junior Cian Phillips started and pitched 4.2 innings as he registered six strikeouts and allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits. Freshman Parker Hohnstock collected the win in relief with 2.1 innings of work and one strikeout recorded and surrendered three hits while holding the Panthers scoreless.

In game two, the fifth inning served as the scoring affair for both teams as the Green & Gold struck first with two runs as Jansen and Rios both posted RBI-singles, 2-0. However, in the bottom half of the fifth, Florida Tech registered five runs and held the Lions at bay for rest of the game for the win.

On the bump, freshman Collin Lock started and was dealt the loss with 4.1 innings in addition to allowing five runs (all earned) on seven hits. Lock notched a trio of strikeouts in his outing. In relief, junior Jackson Wohlers pitched 3.2 innings and recorded a strikeout.

The Lions return to action on Thursday, April 2 as it hosts Embry-Riddle in their SSC series-opening single game with a start time of 6 p.m.
