Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Barry in SSC Play

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team fell twice to Barry in a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) doubleheader on Saturday at Thomas B. Southard Stadium, dropping the opener 10-6 before suffering a 7-5 setback in game two.

GAME ONE – Barry 10, Saint Leo 6
Barry jumped out quickly with a three-run first inning and never trailed, collecting 16 hits in the contest.

Saint Leo answered offensively with 12 hits of its own, highlighted by a pair of RBI from the middle of the order, but the Lions were unable to contain Barry's offense as the Buccaneers added runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings to pull away.

Despite multiple scoring opportunities, Saint Leo stranded runners and could not fully close the gap after cutting into the deficit midway through the game.

On the mound, redshirt sophomore Jake Rychter started and only pitched .1 innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits. In relief, junior Cian Phillips posted four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work as he surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits.

GAME TWO – Barry 7, Saint Leo 5
In the second game, Barry again struck early, plating a run in the first and adding three more in the third inning to take control.

Saint Leo battled back and kept the game within reach, but Barry's power proved decisive as the Buccaneers launched three home runs and tallied 10 hits overall.

The Lions continued to fight late, but a three-run seventh inning by Barry created separation that Saint Leo could not overcome down the stretch.

On the bump, senior Matt Delph pitched 2.1 innings and tallied a trio of strikeouts as he allowed three runs (all earned) on two hits. In relief, freshman Collin Lock registered four Ks and surrendered four runs (all earned) on seven hits.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday, March 24 as they travel to face Eckerd in a non-conference single with a first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
