Saint Leo Athletics Hosts 33rd Edition of Girls and Women in Sports Banquet

SAINT LEO, Fla. – On Thursday, February 5, 2026, Saint Leo University hosted the 33rd edition of its Girls and Women in Sports banquet at the Wellness Center. Saint Leo University President, Dr. Jim Burkee and Vice President of Athletics & Wellness, Marcal Lazenby and Saint Leo Board of Trustees were proud to honor the university's female student-athletes, coaches, and legacy of women's sports advocates.

The evening began with a social reception, setting the stage for a night of recognition and inspiration. Marcal Lazenby opened the program welcoming everyone to tonight's event before acrobatics & tumbling sophomore Karis Fuqua opened with a prayer before dinner was served. The evening emphasizing the university's commitment to empowering female athletes.
 
Following an incredible meal provided by our friends at Olio's Italian Restaurant, Saint Leo head softball coach and Hall of Famer (Class of 2017) Erin Kinberger '07 shared words of inspiration. She also expressed her gratitude and recognized the meaningful role Saint Leo has played in her life, from her time as a student-athlete to her current role leading the program in which she once caught for.
 
One of the highlights of the night was the presentation of the Elaine Evans Spirit of Saint Leo Award. This award is given annually to a female athlete who embodies leadership, service, and the university's core values. This year's recipient was acrobatics & tumbling sophomore Angelique Cauterucci. Recognized for her outstanding contributions both on and off the mat. Her commitment to excellence, sportsmanship, and community service made her a deserving honoree of this prestigious award.
 
The banquet's keynote moment was the Women in Sports Achievement Award presentation. This year's distinguished honoree was Deliah Autry-Jones, a member of the USA Women's National Flag Football team.  Autry-Jones delivered an inspiring speech about the evolving landscape of women's sports.
 
The event concluded with closing remarks, by two fifth-year student-athletes and SAAC members, Kristina Arwady, SAAC President (Women's Soccer) and Maya Cote (women's golf). The two gave a joint speech aimed at inspiring their fellow Lions to cherish the moments at Saint Leo and with their teammates. They also reminded everyone in attendance to remember the little girl they once were and to play for the little girl inside them. They left attendees with a renewed appreciation for the impact of female athletes at Saint Leo and beyond.
 
Saint Leo University extends its gratitude to sponsors and supporters, including Tampa Bay Top 10 Soccer, Robert Cabot & Kristen Cabot Brady, and Barbara Wilson, whose generosity made the evening possible.
