DADE CITY, Fla. — Saint Leo University Athletics is proud to celebrate the recent honor bestowed upon one of its alumni,
Willie Broner Hall of Fame '74. On January 23, 2026, Pasco High School in Dade City, Fla., dedicated its basketball court in honor of Willie Broner. The former Monarchs baseball player is beloved coach, mentor, veteran and Hall of Fame athlete whose life and legacy have left an indelible mark on the community.
Broner, a 1974 Saint Leo graduate and standout on the Monarchs' baseball team, was inducted into the Saint Leo University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001 for his contributions both on and off the field. After his collegiate career, he returned to the Pasco area where he spent 18 years as the head basketball coach and served as athletic director at Pasco High School, compiling a remarkable 308-199 coaching record and guiding his teams to deep playoff runs, including a memorable 1995 semifinal finish — one of only two in school history.
At the court dedication ceremony, Broner stood alongside family members, community leaders and former players as Pasco County officials unveiled a commemorative plaque naming the gym floor in his honor. The event drew an overflow crowd filled with students, alumni and locals who have been touched by Coach Broner's commitment to athletics, education and mentorship.
"We are immensely proud of Willie's legacy," said Marcal Lazenby, Vice President, Athletics & Wellness. "His journey from Saint Leo baseball to community icon exemplifies the heart, character and leadership we strive to instill in all Lions. This recognition by Pasco County celebrates not only his remarkable coaching career but also his lifelong impact on countless student-athletes."
Broner's life story continues to inspire Lions across generations. From playing baseball at Saint Leo to serving his country in the U.S. Army and earning a Purple Heart in Vietnam, then dedicating decades to youth and sport.
Please join us in congratulating Willie Broner on this well-deserved honor and celebrating his enduring legacy in both the Saint Leo community and beyond.
