Baseball Falls in SSC Doubleheader at #1 Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team lost both games of its Sunshine State Conference (SSC) doubleheader versus #1 Tampa on Saturday. The Lions lost game one 20-11 and then dropped game two by a 16-6 margin.

In game one, the Spartans mounted a 5-0 lead before the Lions answered with two runs on a freshman Noah Delgado double to left center. In the eighth, the Green & Gold offense ignited for seven runs that was highlighted by senior Ryan Crivello's grand slam, his second of the season. The Lions scored two more runs to the ninth on a wild pitch followed by an RBI on a fielder's choice by senior Thomas DeBrower.

On the mound, freshman Collin Lock started and pitched 2.2 innings as he registered three strikeouts. He allowed five runs (all earned) on three hits. In relief, freshman Carson Flugaur pitched 3.0 innings and recorded two strikeouts.

In game two, the Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a solo home run by Camdin Jansen followed by an RBI-single by senior Amai Rivera-Martin, an RBI-walk by Delgado, a two-run single from senior Kevin Niedzwiedz to push the Lions advantage to 5-0. After the second, the Green & Gold posted a run and led by a 6-0 margin. However, the Tampa offense scored unanswered runs for the remainder of the game.

On the mound, junior Matt Delph had 2.1 innings of work in the start and struck out two batters while junior Cian Phillips pitched 4.1 innings and notched a trio of strikeouts.

The Lions will return to action on Friday, February 27 as they host Rollins in an SSC bout starting at 5 p.m.
