Saint Leo Athletics Mourns the Loss of Former AD and Coach Norm Kaye

Aug 11, 2025

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University community is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Norm D. Kaye, a Hall of Fame Athletic Director, coach, and visionary leader who dedicated more than three decades to shaping the university's athletic programs and community spirit. Kaye, affectionately known as "Coach K" and "Stormin' Norman," passed away last week, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be woven into the fabric of Saint Leo.

Kaye arrived at Saint Leo College in 1966 and quickly became the embodiment of the green and gold spirit. Over his 30-plus years, he served as Athletic Director, head coach in basketball and baseball, Chairman of the Physical Education Department, Dean of Students, and Director of Financial Aid. His tireless dedication and willingness to take on any role needed made him an indispensable part of the university's growth and success.

In 1975, Kaye spearheaded the creation of the Sunshine State Conference (SSC), bringing together six charter institutions, including then-Saint Leo College. He served as the league's first Commissioner from March 1975 to April 1976 and later as Executive Director from 1981 to 1986, laying the foundation for one of the most successful NCAA Division II conferences in the nation including the addition of women's sports. Today, the SSC has grown to 11 institutions and is recognized nationally for its competitive excellence.

Kaye also established the Saint Leo Athletic Hall of Fame in the mid-1980s to celebrate and honor the university's greatest athletes and contributors. He was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame and, in 1991, into the Saint Leo Athletic Hall of Fame. A year later, Kaye was inducted into the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame as the Class of 1992.

Beyond titles and accolades, Kaye was a mentor and friend to countless athletes, students, and colleagues. His positive influence spanned generations, with many alumni returning to campus just to reconnect with him.

Saint Leo board of trustee Bob Cabot reflected, "Norm was the driving force behind everything we accomplished in athletics during those early years. His vision, dedication, and tireless work gave Saint Leo College athletics a foundation to grow and thrive. We owe him so much, and I will always be grateful for the friendship and guidance he gave me."

"Norm wasn't just a coach or administrator, he was the heart and soul of Saint Leo," said Marcal Lazenby, Vice President of Athletic, Wellness, & Recreation. "His leadership, compassion, and unwavering devotion shaped the trajectory of our athletics program and left a lasting mark on everyone he met."

As the Saint Leo community mourns, it also celebrates a life lived in service to others, a life that built programs, inspired people, and left behind a legacy that will endure for generations.
