DADE CITY, Fla. – Saint Leo University men's basketball head coach Spencer Henke spent Tuesday, July 15, with 174 students in the Pasco Middle School summer program, including an in-depth leadership session with the Counselors in Training group (ages 13–17).
Henke spoke to the teens about time management and the values of building a successful team, using an acrostic to break down the pillars of a cohesive atmosphere. He emphasized the importance of being Fearless, Driven, Empowered, Relentless, and Selfless, standards that serve as the foundation of his basketball program at Saint Leo.
The group then participated in a silent team-building activity. Using only sheets of paper placed on the floor, students had to move from a starting point to a destination without speaking and while keeping at least one foot on each piece of paper. If anyone stepped off or left a paper uncovered, the group would have to start over. Working together silently, the group completed the challenge without a single misstep—an exercise that reinforced the lessons of trust, collaboration, and accountability.
"I want to thank Quinton Sloan and the whole team at Pasco County Parks for allowing me to come speak about leadership, teamwork, and time management," said Henke. "This opportunity was one of the highlights of the summer so far as the campers bought into being Fearless, Driven, Empowered, Relentless and Selfless throughout the time I got to speak to them – which are the standards of our program. One of my biggest goals for the day was to put the campers in situations that forced them to demonstrate each of the standards above as they were the keys to being successful. To see each camper adopt each of these standards was a super cool experience for me as we try to grow our program's impact in the community and help future potential Lions reach their full potential."
Henke's visit is part of Saint Leo Athletics' broader mission to develop future leaders and foster meaningful connections with the local community.
