SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team split its doubleheader versus sixth-ranked Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon. The Lions lost game one by a 10-9 margin before winning game two 7-2.
Game One: #6 Florida Southern 10, Saint Leo 9
The Mocs claimed a 4-0 lead after the first, which was answered by senior
Braden Killens with a three-run homer. Saint Leo tied the game at 4-4 following an RBI-groundout by junior
Dylan Mass. Florida Southern tallied three consecutive runs before junior
Amai Rivera-Martinez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to trim the deficit to 7-5. Senior
Dylan McDonald knocked in a pair of runs with a single through the right side to tie the game, 7-7. The Mocs notched a 10-7 lead in the ninth before McDonald answered with a solo homer and Mass scored on an error, however, the Lions were held at bay for the rest of the inning as Florida Southern won, 10-9.
On the mound, graduate student
Kyle Scrape started an pitched 5.0 innings while collecting three strikeouts with seven runs (six earned) on nine hits.
Game Two: Saint Leo 7, #6 Florida Southern 2
The Green and Gold led by a 2-0 margin after the second following a two-run homer by Jake Carillo. In the sixth, the Mocs scored on a groundout, however, the Lions scored five runs in the seventh to help catapult them to a 7-2 win.
On the mound, junior
Tyler Mecchella started and pitched 7.1 innings in addition to striking out six batters with two runs (one earned) on six hits.
Saint Leo returns to action on Tuesday, April 8 as it hosts Rollins in a non-conference game, starting at 5 p.m.
