PENSACOLA, Fla. – #8 Saint Leo University men's tennis went 1-1 on the final weekend of the regular season. The Lions opened the weekend with a 4-2 win in a neutral site match in Pensacola against West Alabama before falling in the regular season finale to top-ranked West Florida, 4-0 on Sunday. The Lions head into next weekend's Sunshine State Conference tournament with an overall record of 18-7 as the number two seed.
In the first match of the weekend, the Lions claimed the doubles point over West Alabama with wins from the number one and number three doubles pairs.
Luis Iriarte and
Eduardo Cohen earned a 6-2 win at number one doubles.
Jose David Segovia and
Kodai Kato clinched the doubles point for Saint Leo with a 6-3 win at number three doubles.
Saint Leo earned singles wins at number one, four and five to clinch the match victory over West Alabama. Kato opened singles play winning 6-2 and 6-3 to give the Lions a win.
Taiyo Hirano clinched a win for the Lions at number six singles winning 6-4 and 6-3. Segovia won the first set 6-3 before falling in the second set by the same score and earned the victory with a 6-2 final in the third set at number one singles.
West Florida got off to an early lead, claiming the doubles point by a 2-1 margin. All three doubles courts finished with a 6-3 final as the Lions claimed a win at number three doubles by
Jose David Segovia and
Kodai Kato.
The home team earned three straight wins at number four, three, and one to clinch the match victory in all in straight sets. Saint Leo earned first set wins on two of the three singles courts that went unfinished. Segovia earned 6-4 first set win before a 6-0 loss in the second set forced a third set which was 2-1 in Segovia's favor when play was abandoned.
Eduardo Cohen won the tiebreaker, 7-5, in the first set and was leading 5-1 when play was abandoned at number six singles.
