SAINT LEO, Fla. – It was a milestone night in goal for junior goalie
Jessica Harclerode as the sixth-ranked Saint Leo Lions earned a 14-8 win over Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday night. The junior goalie made seven saves on the night as she eclipsed the 400 career save mark, ending the night with 402 career saves.
Jana Nuss inched closer to the program record of 51 assists with two on the night. The Lions improved to 9-1 on the season as the Owls fall to 4-2 overall.
Nuss had a goal and a pair of assists on the night as she moved into second place all time in program history with 50 assists. The Lions were led by
Sophia Wood and
Marina Dean, who tallied three goals each. Wood and Nuss both had a pair of assists to lead the team. The Lions won 17 of 23 draw controls as M. Dean led the team with six and
Emma Hayhurst had three.
Clara Gallapoo and
Natalie Jones recorded a pair of goals each. Four additional Lions found the back of the net in the win,
Holly Hill, Nuss,
Zoey Lind, and Ella Lowery recorded her first collegiate goal in the process. The Green & Gold used both goalies in the win as Harclerode made seven saves in the first three quarters.
Makayla Goetz played the entirety of the fourth quarter making a pair of saves.
#6 SAINT LEO 14, SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE 8
The opening quarter was a quite one in terms of scoring as the first 15 minutes ended knotted at 1-1. All the scoring in the first quarter took place in the a 13-second span as SCSU opened the scoring at the 6:12 mark in the first.
Marina Dean followed that as took the ensuing draw and ran straight to the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Just as they did in the first quarter, the Owls opened the scoring in the second quarter. After taking a 2-1 lead the Lions used a 3-0 run over a two and a half minute span. Gallapoo, Jones, and M. Dean gave the home team its first lead of the game, a lead they would never relinquish. The visitors responded with a goal just under the nine minute mark to make it a one goal game. That deficit quickly grew to five goals as Saint Leo used a 5-0 run to go into the halftime break leading 8-3.
In the third quarter, Saint Leo's Hill capitalized on a woman up chance to make it a 9-3 lead. Saint Leo The visiting Griffins opened the game on a 2-0 run over the first eight minutes of the game. Saint Leo followed with a 3-0 run to take a lead it never relinquished asHills's goal to open the third quarter proved to be the game winner.
The final quarter was the only quarter 3-2 with goals from Wood and Lowery.
