Women’s Basketball Drops SSC Contest to Barry at Home

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo Wo men's basketball team lost at home versus the Barry Buccaneers 82 to 61 in a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) contest on Wednesday evening.

The Lions started strong in the first quarter. Layups from Graduate student junior Jumoke Adaramoye and Alanis Diaz kept the game tied through the first three minutes. However, the Buccaneers would keep the Lions scoreless for the next four minutes, until a layup from junior Taydra Simpson temporarily ended the Lions' scoring drought. The Buccaneers closed the period with a 15-4 run over the final seven minutes by pressuring the Lions into turnovers and contested shots throughout the remainder of the opening quarter.

The Lions opened the second frame with four quick points. However, the Buccaneers answered quickly, knocking down two three-point field goals to maintain their double-digit lead. The Lions' defense responded by not allowing a Barry point for over four minutes. The Lions' offense would cut the lead to five thanks to three-pointers from redshirt junior Chynna Mattair and freshman Vanessa McManus

Adaramoye and McManus scored a combined nine points early in the third period. The Buccanneers were able to maintain their lead despite multiple turnovers that kept Saint Leo in the game. However, multiple scoreless possessions and turnovers from the Lions led to Barry extending their lead to 18 as the third quarter ended.

The Barry lead would get as high as 22. Saint Leo would not make a field goal for over four minutes as Buccaneers lead proved too much to overcome.

McManus led the Lions with 19 points in addition to five rebounds while Adaramoye finished the game with 10 points, five boards, and a pair of steals. Diaz registered seven points, seven rebounds, and dished out three assists.

Saint Leo returns to the court on Saturday, February 8 as it travels to West Palm Beach to play Palm Beach Atlantic in an SSC bout, starting at 5 p.m.
