Softball Drops Series in Doubleheader Sweep by Rollins

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University softball wrapped up its three-game SSC series with the Tars of Rollins College on Saturday with a doubleheader. The Tars took both ends of the doubleheader to win the series over the Lions. Saint Leo drops to 8-8 overall and 1-5 in SSC play as the Tars are now 7-3 overall and 5-1 in conference action.

Game 1: Rollins 7, Saint Leo 4
  • The Lions' bats carried over the energy from their run-rule win on Friday night, scoring first on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Sydney Cline. The Lions tacked on two more runs in the third inning, thanks to an RBI bunt single from Briana Neal, and an RBI single from Alexis Barber
  • Haleigh Thomas pitched three and a third innings scoreless innings of one-hit softball before the Tars bats heated up in the fourth inning. Rollins plated two runs on an RBI single, before tying the game moments later.
  • The Tars blew the game open in the sixth inning, with runs coming in from multiple bases-loaded opportunities. The Lions had a late opportunity to get back in the game, scoring once in the sixth inning, but were unable to bring home any more runners as Rollins held onto the victory.
  • Saint Leo was led by Briana Neal going 2-for-2, with a hit, two runs scored, two RBI, and a walk. Hope Epps and Maddie Antioco also had a multi-hit game.

Game 2: Rollins 2, Saint Leo 1
  • The Tars began the second game of the doubleheader with red-hot bats. The Tars scored a run and had two more runners reach base before Tierney Hocquard recorded an out. However, the Lions' defense rallied behind their pitcher by limiting the Tars to just two runs.
  • The game would turn into a pitcher's duel until Lyric Pittman singled home Briana Neal in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Neither side scored any more runs, as both pitchers settled into the game. Saint Leo had three more base runners but was unable to bring any home as the Tars swept the doubleheader.
  • In the second game, the Lions were led offensively by multi-hit games from Maddie Antioco and Briana Neal. Pitcher Tierney Hocquard bounced back after a rough first inning to finish a seven-inning complete game, allowing two earned runs on five hits.
