SAINT LEO, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's lacrosse team collected a 12-10 victory at home in a non-conference bout versus Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night.
The Chargers scored first, however, the Lions answered with four straight goals to take a 4-1 advantage. Alabama-Huntsville finished the opening frame on a 3-2 run as the Green and Gold led by a 6-4 margin at the end of the first. The Chargers held Saint Leo scoreless in the second quarter while scoring two times themselves to tie the game 6-6 at halftime.
In the third quarter, both defenses were stout as only three goals were scored in the frame. Sophomores
Natalie Jones and
Briana Bellando registered the two goals for the Lions in the third. With the game tied at 9-9 in the fourth, the Lions laced three consecutive goals from three different players as juniors
Holly Hill,
Sophia Wood, and
Jana Nuss gave Saint Leo a 12-9 lead. The Green and Gold held Alabama-Huntsville at bay for the remainder of the game to earn the 12-10 win.
The Lions offensive attack was led by Jones, who recorded a career-high four goals while Hill tallied four points that featured two goals and a pair of assists. Nuss finished the game with two goals and one assist while senior
Emma Hayhurst dished out two assists and posted four draw controls. Senior
Maria Palomba posted one goal that marks her 50th career goal. Wood and Bellando each registered one goal while freshman
Alexandra Bushey recorded a goal, marking her third of the year.
In the net, junior
Jessica Harclerode collected nine saves and seven ground balls in the complete-game victory.
