Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short In Conference Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Saint Leo University women's basketball fell short in their conference opener against #9 Embry Riddle University by a final score of 87-55.  

The l=Lions opened the first quarter with energy and multiple strong finishes from freshman Zoe O'Leary. Saint Leo limited second-chance looks defensively and forced contested attempts around the rim to stay within reach through the opening stretch. Despite Embry Riddle's early scoring run, Saint Leo continued to work the ball inside and closed the quarter trailing 18-8. 

In the second quarter, the Lions  found success at the free-throw line, knocking down four of five attempts along with a quick basket from graduate student Paula Llovich Peña inside. Freshman Jaileen Green contributed at the stripe to keep momentum alive. The quarter closed with Saint Leo scoring 10 points and trailing 41-18 at the half. 

Saint Leo delivered its strongest performance of the day in the third quarter, igniting offensively with improved ball movement and perimeter efficiency. The Lions tallied 21 points in the frame, including four made three pointers from freshmen duo Jocelyn Gagnon and Macie McNece, who helped stretch the defense. O'Leary continued to produce in the paint, and Saint Leo capitalized on defensive stops to generate higher-percentage opportunities. The lions trailed  

In the fourth quarter the Lions kept even with the Eagles but ultimately fell 87-55. 

O'Leary led Saint Leo with 17 points and six rebounds, while Green added 16 points in an efficient outing, and the Lions' reserves combined for 18 points to highlight lineup versatility. Saint Leo's scoring balance, defensive toughness in stretches, and strong third-quarter response underscored competitive growth as conference play continues.

The women's basketball team comes back home to play the University of Central Missouri Jennies on Mon. Nov. 24 at 2 P.M.
