Last-Second Layup Hands Men's Basketball a 72-70 Defeat at Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Saint Leo University men's basketball team hit the road for a mid-week Sunshine State Conference showdown at Rollins College on Wednesday night. The Lions staged a late comeback in the final minutes of the game using a 6-0 run to tie the game at 70-70. However, the home team was able to run ball down the court as time expired for the game-winning layup. Saint Leo falls to 7-8 overall and 2-5 in SSC play while Rollins improves to 9-6 and 2-4 in conference play.   

Freshman Brady Corso had a team best 22 points with a pair of steals and an assist off the bench for the Lions as he was six-for-11 from beyond the arc. Reigning SSC Defensive Player of the Week, Jaylan McElroy had 13 points, eight rebounds, a block, a steal, and an assist. Tae Wilson (12) and Amar Hot (10), also hit double digits for the visitors. Wilson added 10 rebounds to 12 points to record a double-double.

  • Jaylan McElroy contributed 13 points and eight rebounds, including a crucial tip-in to tie the game at 70-70 with under a minute left.
  • Saint Leo struggled from the free-throw line, converting just 7-of-14 attempts, leaving valuable points on the table.
  • Rollins' Latimer III was the difference-maker, scoring 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting and delivering in clutch moments.
  • The Lions shot 42.2% from the field and hit 9-of-23 three-pointers but were outpaced by Rollins' 46.0% shooting.
  • Both teams finished with 38 rebounds, but Rollins' second-chance points (11) proved pivotal in the tight contest.
  • Amar Hot added 10 points and four assists for the Lions, including a pair of key three-pointers to keep the game within reach.
  • Saint Leo's comeback effort saw them outscore Rollins 37-36 in the second half, but they couldn't secure the win in the final seconds.

Saint Leo's road trip continues with a trip down south to take on top-ranked Nova Southeastern. The Lions and the Sharks are scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. tip off in Ft. Lauderdale.
