Men’s Basketball Takes Down #8 Florida Southern in Double OT-Thriller

SAINT LEO, Fla. – In a double overtime thriller versus the eighth-ranked Florida Southern Mocs, the Saint Leo men's basketball team collected a 102-100 victory at home on Saturday night in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) action.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Lions have beaten a top-10 team in national rankings as they beat 10th-ranked North Georgia last season in the Mocs Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 24.

Freshman Jaylan McElroy connected on a free throw attempt near the end of regulation followed by a last second mid-range jumper by the Lions was off the mark, sending the game into overtime.

The Lions were down 93-88 in the opening overtime frame with less than a minute remaining until freshman Camden Cerese laced a corner three and then a pair of free throws to send the game into another overtime period.

With 1:28 remaining in the second overtime period, senior Tae Wilson notched a tip-in to give the Lions a 102-98 advantage. The Mocs answered with a layup to make the game a one possession margin, 102-100. In the closing seconds, the Mocs' Dominick Denny attempted a three-pointer in the corner that was no good as the Green and Gold earned the win.

Wilson led the Lions charge with 24 points to go with eight rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and one block. McElroy tallied a season-best 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and a season-high 12 boards to earn his second double-double of the year. Cerese registered season highs with 22 points and seven rebounds while converting 11 of his 14 free throw attempts. Freshman Brady Corso finished the game with 18 points and four rebounds. Graduate student Eric Jones was stout on the defensive end of the court with five blocks and four steals to go along with five boards.

As a team, the Lions shot 43.54 percent from the field while only converting 28.0 percent from the three-point line and shooting 63.0 percent from the charity stripe. On defense, the Green and Gold denied 11 shots with 11 total steals.

Saint Leo returns to the court on Wednesday, January 22 as its hosts Lynn in an SSC match up, starting at 7:30 p.m.
