MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In its 2024 season-opener, the Saint Leo men's soccer team lost 1-0 on the road versus Auburn-Montgomery in non-conference action on Thursday night.
The Warhawks held an early scoring opportunity in the third minute of the game as AUM attempted a corner kick that was denied by the Lions' backline. AUM's offense tallied a shot attempt that was blocked by Saint Leo in the fourth minute of the opening half. During the eighth minute, the Warhawks registered a shot attempt high right of the goal following a corner kick. At the 8:48-mark, AUM claimed its 1-0 lead with a double assist goal.
Lions were on the attack in the 26th minute of the game as junior
Anel Rojas blasted a shot on goal that was saved by AUM. The Green and Gold continued in their attacking zone as they attempted the next two corner kicks. For the remainder of the first half, both offenses were held in check as the Warhawks maintained their 1-0 edge at intermission.
The Warhawks opened the second half with consecutive corner kicks followed by two shots in the 48th and 49th minute. The Lions answered with back-to-back shots first from senior
Edoardo Degl'Innocenti which was blocked, and then by Rojas that missed right of the goal. In the closing minutes, junior
Liam Thomas and Degl'Innocenti each notched shots, however, neither could find the net as the Warhawks held on for the 1-0 win.
AUM out shot the Lions 11-9 with both teams recording one shot on goal and five corner kicks.
Saint Leo returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 7 as it continues its opening week on the road versus #13 West Florida with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
