Owen's Equalizer Gives Women's Soccer a 2-2 Draw Against Florida Southern

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Sunday's Sunshine State Conference meeting between Saint Leo University women's soccer and Florida Southern was originally scheduled for Wednesday but due to the incoming Hurricane Helene was forced to be rescheduled. The Lions (4-1-2, 1-0-1) and Mocs (3-1-3, 0-0-2) met at Saint Leo Soccer Field for a mid-morning match up. Saint Leo sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer extended her scoreless streak by another 30 minutes before a penalty kick opened the scoring for the Mocs. Goals by senior Franziska Theus and graduate transfer Ella Owen helped erase a 2-0 Moccasin lead. The Lions and the Mocs ended in a 2-2 draw extended the Lions' unbeaten streak to five games.

Goetzer made two saves, one in each half, compared to just one by her FSC counterpart. Katja May and Elise McDonald tallied an assist on the goal by Theus.

SAINT LEO 2, FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2
  • The Southern attacked came out strong early registering the first shot of the game nearly three minutes in.
  • McDonald registered her first shot of the game 13 minutes later as her shot to the bottom left of the goal was saved.
  • Goetzer made her only save of the first half on a hard shot also to the bottom left.
  • Following a foul on the Lions, Florida Southern was awarded a penalty kick and capitalized on its opportunity. In the 31st minute, the Mocs got on the board as the PK went to the right side of the open goal for the easy 1-0 advantage.
  • The defenses held their own over the final 15 minutes of the first 45 as neither team registered a shot.
  • Florida Southern wasted no time giving the Lions its first multi-goal deficit as the Mocs found the back of the net just 66 seconds into the second half.
  • Saint Leo quickly responded with its first goal of the game in the 51st minute. The Lions earned a corner kick and made sure it was not a wasted opportunity. McDonald sent a ball into the crowded box. May got a piece of the corner kick and deflected it to Theus who directed it to the back of the net cutting the Moccasin lead in half.
  • Owen provided a much-needed equalizer in the 73rd minute. The Lions played a ball deep in to the attacking zone that hit off a Moccasin defender and Owen was able to get a good strike on the ball to lift it over the keeper for the equalizer.
  • Saint Leo thought it had the go-ahead goal late in the game on a deep ball that Mina Häggström sent to the back of the net but unfortunately was whistled dead as the ball went over the end line before the shot.
  • The Lions were able to hold off a corner kick by the Mocs with less than six minutes remaining to keep the game knotted at 2-2.
