SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University men's basketball head coach
Lance Randall has announced he is stepping down from his position as the head coach of Saint Leo men's basketball. Randall has spent nine of the last 13 seasons leading the Lions over two stints as the head coach. He will be heading back to his home state to join the men's basketball staff at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an assistant coach.
Spencer Henke has been named the interim head coach at this time.
"
Lance Randall has been an incredible leader for our basketball program during his two stints as the head coach," said Marcal Lazenby, Director of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation at Saint Leo. "I want to thank Lance for his contributions to the program and the Saint Leo community and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career."
Over his nine years coaching the Lions, Randall compiled a 146-100 record that included winning both SSC titles in program history. Randall's 2012-13 team claimed the first regular season title in program history and then in 2021 the team won the first SSC tournament championship with a victory over Florida Southern. Randall leaves Saint Leo as the winningest head coach in men's basketball program history.
Randall's teams have twice set program records for wins in a season, first winning 22 games in 2012-13 and then setting the program record for wins in a season with 24, a season later. In 2022-23, the Lions eclipsed the 20-win mark for the first time in 10 years winning 22 games and finishing second in SSC. Randall led the Lions to three NCAA South Region berths in 2012, 2013, and 2014. The 2022-23 team set a program record with 13 SSC victories to finish second in the conference.
"I am so thankful for our nine years at Saint Leo as this is a special place for me and my family," said Randall. "It is very difficult to leave but the timing is right. There is a lot going on in collegiate athletics and this move makes sense for our family at this time. This is really one of the only jobs in the country I would even consider leaving Saint Leo for."
During his tenure Randall was honored by his SSC men's basketball coaching peers as the SSC Coach of the Year twice, first in 2012 and then again in 2021. The Lions earned 20 All-SSC selections as well as Newcomer of the Year (Frank Webb, 2021; Jerrel Harris, 2013; Trent Thomas, 2012), Player of the Year (Marcus Ruh, 2013), Defensive Player of the Year (Shaun Adams, 2013).
Randall also added, "I'm so thankful for my boss and good friend Marcal, I have absolutely loved the partnership we have formed in our year together and I know the athletic department is in good hands with Marcal at the lead. I would also like to thank Fran Reidy for hiring me twice along with Dr. Kirk and Dr. Senise for allowing me to be the Saint Leo men's basketball coach and their support along the way."
Last summer, Randall was invited to join the Minnesota Timberwolves as an assistant coach with the summer league and training camp. Earlier this year, Randall was selected to lead Great Brittan's U20 team that will compete later this summer.
