SAINT LEO, Fla. – The seventh-ranked ranked Saint Leo baseball team wrapped up the 2024 regular season with a split versus Rollins in a doubleheader on Saturday in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) as the Lions celebrated Senior Day. Saint Leo registered a 4-3 victory in game one before dropping game two by a 10-3 margin.
GAME ONE: #7 Saint Leo 4, Rollins 3
The Lions started off hot in game one as they claimed a 2-0 lead in the first following an RBI-single to left field from junior Callen Moss that plated sophomore Dylan Mass before senior Mikey Scott recorded an RBI-double to left center. In the second inning, cut their deficit in half with a score on a wild pitch, 2-1. During the fourth inning, the Tars tied the game 2-2 with a double to left center. Rollins grasped a 3-2 in the sixth following a solo home run to left center. Graduate student Buck Anderson laced a two-run double left field to give Saint Leo a 4-3 advantage. In the ninth, the Tars were able to get a baserunner on first before the Lions held them at bay to secure the win.
Senior Josh Davis went 2-for-3 at the dish and was walked once. Moss recorded two hits in five at-bats with an RBI while Anderson went 1-for-2 and drove in two runs. On the mound, senior Evan Wolf started for the Lions and posted a trio of strikeouts and allowed three runs (all earned) on two hits in 7.0 innings and earned the win while freshman Russell Sandefer notched two strikeouts in 2.0 innings to collect the save.
GAME TWO: Rollins 10, #7 Saint Leo 3
The Tars exploded out of the gates in the second inning with a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, graduate student Yazael Nunez blasted an RBI-double to left center to cut the Lions deficit to 8-1. Rollins answered in the third as it grew its lead to 8-1 before Mass recorded an RBI-groundout to second base, 9-2. The Tars added another run in the fifth to lead by a 10-2 margin before Anderson notched a sacrifice-fly to right field and drove in senior Cooper Miles.
Nunez and senior Caleb Adams recorded two hits while Moss, graduate student Zach Benson, and Miles each tallied one hit. Senior Aedan Walter was the starting pitcher for the Lions in game two and struck out three batters while surrendering eight runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings.
Saint Leo finishes the regular season with a 38-11 record with a 21-9 mark in SSC play. The NCAA Division II Baseball South Regional bracket will be aired on Sunday, May 12 at 10:30 p.m.
