#3 Baseball Concludes Series Sweep of Eckerd in Convincing Fashion

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The third-ranked Saint Leo baseball team completed the series sweep versus Eckerd on Saturday afternoon in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) action on Saturday afternoon as the Lions won by a 7-6 margin in game one followed by a 10-0 blanking in game two.

GAME ONE: #3 Saint Leo 7, Eckerd 6

The Tritons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead following a triple to left field in the opening inning. In the third inning, Eckerd extended its edge to 2-0 after a fielding error scored a run. The Lions started to build momentum in the fourth as graduate student Zach Benson laced a single to third base to plate senior Mikey Scott, 2-1. Sophomore Ryan Crivello continued the four-run inning for the Green and Gold with an RBI-walk followed by senior Caleb Adams tallying an RBI-single to the shortstop which gave the Lions a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Dylan Mass stretched the Green and Gold lead to 4-2 after driving in Benson.

The Tritons answered with an RBI-double in the sixth to trim their deficit to 4-3 before graduate student Buck Anderson laced an RBI-single to right field as Crivello came around to score, 5-3. During the seventh, graduate student Yazael Nunez posted a RBI-bunt down the third base line as senior Josh Davis crossed home plate as the Lions led by a 6-3 margin before Moss scored on a wild pitch, 7-3. In the eighth, the Tritons built momentum as they plated a pair of runs with a single through the left side and a sacrifice-fly. Eckerd cut their deficit to 7-6 after an RBI-single to left field in the ninth before graduate student Nick Jennings registered a game-sealing strikeout.

Moss went 2-for-4 and scored three times while Crivello tallied three walks and one RBI. A total of six Lions tallied an RBI while eight players from Saint Leo recorded a knock in the game. On the mound, senior Evan Wolf started for the Lions and tallied three strikeouts while surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits in 6.0 innings to collect the win. In relief, graduate student Nick Jennings earned the save as he struck out two batters in 1.0 innings.

GAME TWO: #3 Saint Leo 10, Eckerd 0 (7 inns.)

Highlighted by a six-run seventh inning, the Lions went on to run-rule the Tritons following a walk-off hit-by-pitch on Mass. The scoring frenzy of the seventh inning started with a solo homer by Adams followed by an RBI-single from Anderson through the right side. Scott blasted a two-run double down the left field line beforeMoss singled to left field to drive in Scott. Moss eventually scored on a pass ball that gave the Lions an 8-0 lead followed by Benson earning an RBI-walk and capped off by the Mass hit-by-pitch.

The Lions scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the second inning before registering a pair of runs in the fifth with Mass blasting an RBI-double to center field and Anderson recording an RBI-single through the right side.

Moss went a perfect 3-for-3 in game two in addition to one RBI and two runs while Mass finished with two hits and two RBI. Anderson posted one hit and one RBI along with Scott driving in a pair of runs on one hit. Senior Aedan Walter started for the Lions and earned the complete-game victory as he struck out four batters and just allowed two hits in 7.0 innings on 87 pitches.

Saint Leo returns to action on Friday, May 3 as it travels to take on top-ranked Tampa in an SSC showdown at 6 p.m.
